MASTERS OF SEX: ALL TOGETHER NOW (TV)
Summary
One in this drama series based on the book by Thomas Maier about the groundbreaking research into human sexuality conducted by Dr. William Masters and Virginia Johnson. In this episode, Bill and Gini continue their "participation" in the study together, formally discussing the results afterwards. Austin spots Margaret at a bar and she mentions that Barton is going away for the weekend, hinting that they should continue their affair. Ethan leaves Vivian at his home in the morning and tells her that he is headed to work, though he really goes to meet Gini at a car dealership, and the two of them discuss their first sexual experiences as he advises her about a new purchase and offers to be her co-signer. Bill talks to a couple, the Prescotts, who are unable to conceive despite their exuberant sex life, and is frustrated by his latest replacement secretary, Adelaide. Gini returns to the office to find that he has fired the new woman, and she vows to find someone better rather than be "demoted" herself. Libby convinces an unsure Ethan to continue administering her fertility treatments, longing to have a child despite Bill's resistance to trying again.
At dinner, Ethan's brother David briefly mistakes Vivian for Gini, suggesting that Ethan is not over his former flame. Barton heads to a notorious part of town and is attacked by thugs, but Dale arrives just in time and rescues him. Austin and Margaret spend a cozy evening together at her home, and as Bill and Gini fill out the participant questionnaires, Bill awkwardly reveals that he and Libby have not been intimate since her miscarriage. Gini states that she finds it easy to separate sex and love, and they have a more "successful" session together thanks to the Prescotts' suggestions. As Bill heads for home, however, he spots an injured Barton attempting to patch himself up in private, and he impatiently dismisses Barton's story of a random mugging and tells him that he knows of his secret life. Bill reminds him that he could lose his career and his family if the truth comes out, though Barton is determined to keep it under wraps. Margaret is shocked when her husband arrives home and interrupts her weekend with Austin, and Barton quickly realizes that she has been with another man. Bill returns home to a drunk and bored Libby, who attempts to initiate sex, but he turns her down.
In the morning, Margaret angrily confronts Barton for his lack of interest in her affair, sure that he himself has been with "other women" and is no longer attracted to her. Bill finds that Gini has rehired Jane, who proves herself to be an excellent secretary, and Libby hints to Gini that Bill's demanding work schedule is infringing upon their married life. Bill, annoyed, points out that scientists often test their work upon themselves, but Gini firmly tells him that their "research" cannot affect Libby. Ethan spots Bill and Gini working late together and seems to guess that they are involved, and Bill, clearly motivated by Gini's words, makes more of an effort with Libby. Austin is alarmed when Margaret states that he "saved her life" and tells his shrink that she is taking their affair too seriously. Ethan asks for Libby's feminine advice and then informs Vivian that while his last girlfriend broke his heart, he is now wholly invested in his future with her. Bill assures Gini that he has "rectified" matters with Libby, and Barton and Dale's relationship seems to deepen as they meet again, this time at a hotel for safety. Bill agrees that Jane is an adequate secretary, though notes that Gini is still preferable because of her ability to "anticipate his needs," and their "research" grows more passionate as their compatibility increases. Bill then immediately heads home to Libby, however, and Gini seems conflicted about her martial advice to him.
