SONS AND DAUGHTERS: TELLING SECRETS {UNAIRED EPISODE} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy-drama series about the misadventures of the blended Lincoln-Hammersmith family.

In this unaired episode, Lindy spends long days alone with the baby as Gary works long hours; elsewhere, Tess invites her new beau, pretentious psychiatrist Dalton Barnett, over for dinner. Rocky is annoyed when Paulette heads out for the evening with his friend Will Patterson, who is well-known as a ladies' man, and Dalton comments on the "repressed rage" within the family. At baby class, Lindy finds that Gary's car has been sideswiped in the parking lot, and single dad Fernando offers to repair it for her at a "mommy discount." Paulette dodges Rocky's questions about her date, and when Tess and Dalton return from a night at the symphony, he falls off a low stool and injures his ankle. Unable to leave the home, he begins offering unsolicited "constructive criticism" of the family's behavior, particularly annoying Mary Ruth and Bing. At the garage, Lindy chats with Fernando as he works on Gary's car, and he takes notice when she admits that she intends to hide the accident from her oft-absent husband.

Rocky confronts Will about his night with Paulette, and Will finally admits that he told her that he believes himself to be gay. Rocky is stunned, arguing that Will does not "act" gay and is known for dating many women; Will explains that he has been in denial for a long time. Feeling betrayed, Rocky orders him out of the home. Tess tries to talk to Dalton about his "overbearing and clinical" nature, but he shocks her by proposing marriage, stating that they are "almost" intellectual equals. Rocky coldly rebuffs Will's attempts to talk to him at school. When Will calls him out on being a fair-weather friend, the two begin to brawl and Spud is forced to break it up. Tess has strange dreams about her "high-class" life with Dalton; when Lindy visits Fernando again to retrieve the car, she ends up confessing that she feels lonely and unfulfilled in her marriage, explaining that he is the "first new thing" to come into her life for some time. The two impulsively kiss, but quickly realize that they cannot go through with an affair.

Rocky awkwardly tells his father about Will's revelation. While Spud acknowledges that he, too, has some discomfort regarding gay people, he reminds his son that staying loyal to one's friends is important and that it is "up to him" how he handles the matter. Tess is baffled to find that Dalton is suing her for negligence over the wobbly stool; she finally declares that while she initially enjoyed dating someone of high intelligence, the relationship is clearly doomed. Dalton makes a melodramatic exit, while elsewhere Gary finally returns home and Lindy greets him eagerly, telling him that they must be more "spontaneous" with one another. Later, Fernando stops by to return her checkbook, and Gary seems to notice sparks flying between the two. Paulette informs her brother that she intends to stay friends with Will. When Will arrives to pick her up, Rocky hesitantly asks him to hang out later on, signaling his intentions to repair the friendship. Later, Gary surprises Lindy with a bottle of champagne, clearly wanting to bring excitement back into the marriage. Commercials deleted.
