SONS AND DAUGHTERS: THROW MAMA FROM THE TERRAIN {UNAIRED EPISODE} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy-drama series about the misadventures of the blended Lincoln-Hammersmith family. In this unaired episode, Bing and Mary Ruth are less than pleased with the kids' unappealing and belated housewarming gift, and everyone is shocked when Marcy, mother to Gary, Tess and Patty, suddenly reappears after a twenty-three-year absence from their lives. The kids are pleased to meet their "new" grandmother, who is recently widowed, though Marcy's children struggle to process their feelings of anger towards her for abandoning them. Elsewhere, Ike heads for his first-ever sleepover at his friend Roy Sanders' house and finds himself overcome with nerves, and when Lindy and Gary are kicked out of an upscale restaurant for breastfeeding Dakota at the table, a no-nonsense attorney, Sheila Albright, approaches Lindy and encourages her to sue for discrimination. Marcy bonds with Astrid, though Tess seems unprepared to accept her mother back into her life. Patty seeks comfort with Spud, explaining that she always secretly believed herself to be her mother's favorite and therefore the one who caused her departure, and realizes just how much Marcy's absence has affected her adult life.

Gary's boss Mel requests that Lindy apologize to the restaurant for the breast-feeding incident, as the establishment is a big client of their firm's, and Lindy begins to reconsider Sheila's offer. Mary Ruth wonders if Bing has "unfinished business" with his ex, though he assures her that he no longer cares for Marcy either positively or negatively. Tess admits that despite her ongoing resentment, she is tempted by Marcy's offer of a family dinner with the four of them, and Lindy is startled when Sheila quickly arranges the lawsuit and informs her that she must appear on television to gain publicity and sympathy for her cause. Roy challenges Ike to stay overnight again without panicking as he did the first time, and Gary is relieved to hear that Mel has settled things with the restaurant – but then sees his own wife on television speaking out against it.

Patty, Gary and Tess sit down with Marcy and attempt to share a pleasant meal, but they quickly begin to argue about the past and Marcy explains that she felt "trapped" with her three young children, particularly because of Bing's frequent absences. Later, Ike wets the bed at Roy's house and calls his parents in a panic, and Patty and Spud recruit an annoyed Rocky and Paulette to help them steal, wash, dry and replace the telltale sheets without waking the Sanderses, though their sensitive home alarm system nearly causes a disaster. Lindy prepares to appear on a call-in TV program, and though Gary begs her not to go through with it, he ends up defending her right to breastfeed wherever she chooses and argues with a rude caller – who turns out to be the restaurant owner. Bing and Marcy finally talk, with Bing admitting that he was not a good husband to her, though he calls her out on serving only her own emotional needs by trying to force the kids to forgive her before they are ready to do so. Back at home, the three kids watch home movies of their childhood and agree that their mother does not really understand the profound effect that her departure had on them, and Marcy, overhearing this, quietly leaves the house for good.
