HERE'S LUCY: THE BIG GAME (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series starring Lucille Ball as Lucy Carter, a single mother working for her brother-in-law Harry at his employment agency.
Lucy and Mary Jane decorate for a football-themed luncheon, spurred by a major football game between Southern California and Oklahoma. Harry is quite excited when he gets O.J. Simpson to be the guest of honor at the luncheon. O.J. appears and offers a brief speech based on answers to questions he is frequently asked about himself. However, things go awry when Lucy accidentally switches some of O.J.’s speech notes with her shopping list. Lucy proves to be rather obstructive to the proceedings, interjecting her own commentary and taking over the microphone from Harry at one point. One of her interruptions causes a decoration to topple, accidentally splattering punch all over O.J. Lucy frantically dries him off, although he doesn’t make a big deal out of it. He gives away a couple of extra tickets to the game to Harry, and Lucy invites herself along as well. The tickets are for seats right on the fifty-yard line, and Harry learns that one of his business associates, Mr. Tilford, would be willing to pay quite handsomely for seats to the sold-out game, perhaps for many times the ticket price. He sells him the tickets, disappointing Lucy. However, O.J. returns and offers to have his wife pick up Harry and Lucy to bring them to the game, forcing him to deceive O.J. into thinking that he still has the tickets; the tickets are for seats right next to his wife, meaning that O.J. will quickly learn of the deception if they do not recover the tickets.
Hoping to avoid embarrassment, Lucy convinces Harry to contact Tilford to try to buy back the tickets. Lucy informs him of their predicament, and Tilford realizes that he has an opportunity to get back at Harry for overcharging him for the tickets. He decides to sell them back, but only for double what he paid for them. Harry purchases the tickets, albeit with extreme reluctance. Tilford leaves and O.J. arrives; it turns out that his wife will not be able to attend the game after all. Harry is highly upset at this development until O.J. gives them his wife’s tickets, leaving them with a total of four. Harry plans to both attend the game and sell the extra tickets in front of the stadium before the game starts. In front of the stadium Harry and Lucy attempt to discreetly scalp the tickets to people turned away from the front gate. They have no success until they run into a pair of rowdy fans who realize that they have misplaced their tickets. He successfully makes the sale, but it turns out that the two are actually undercover policemen who promptly arrest Harry. The tickets they confiscate from Harry are given to off-duty police officers so they can attend the game. Lucy visits Harry at the police station and tries to make things up to him by broadcasting the game to him over her portable radio. They hear O.J.’s commentary over the radio, and he believes that Harry willingly donated the tickets to the police department. Harry is touched by O.J.’s newfound faith in his good character.
