JULIA: PAINT YOUR WAGGEDORN (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedies about Julia Baker, a black, widowed nurse, and her young son, Corey. In this episode, Julia and Marie are exasperated by their sons' rambunctious behavior as they attempt to sew Marie a dress for the upcoming open house at school. The boys soon meet Pamela, the young granddaughter of their neighbors, the Bennetts, though she is less than pleased with their rowdy games. Later, crayon drawings are found on the wall in the hallway, and Marie and Julia overhear Mrs. Bennett complaining that the building is "turning into a ghetto" because of "those people." Mr. Cooper states that he will not make any assumptions about the culprit without proof, and Julia figures out that Pamela is probably the rogue artist, having acquired Corey's crayons through a series of trades. She attempts to explain racism to her son, telling him that people like the Bennetts believe those of other races to be inferior, and Corey informs Earl that he can no longer play with Pamela, as she too is presumably prejudiced.

Julia tells Marie about her late husband as they continue working on the dress, musing that Corey will hopefully turn out to be an upstanding person like his father. Mrs. Bennett hints to Mr. Cooper as he repaints the damaged wall that she intends to leave the building, worried that more of Julia's "kind" will move in, but the landlord makes it clear that he does not share her views and considers the Bakers to be ideal tenants. As Corey ponders what to bring to school for show-and-tell, the Bennetts frantically summon Julia to save Pamela from choking. When she does so, they find that the girl attempted to swallow a crayon, wanting to disguise the fact that she has again drawn on the walls. Ashamed of her assumptions, Mrs. Bennett admits her error and asks for Julia's forgiveness, and the dispute is forgotten. Later, Julia, Marie and the Calverts prepare to head to the open house, and Cooper is annoyed to realize that his tenants have found an excellent way to get him to repaint their apartments.
