NANNY, THE: THE ENGAGEMENT (TV)

Summary

One in this clash-of-cultures comedy series about Fran Fine, a flamboyant, wisecracking Jewish woman from Queens employed as a nanny by the upper-crust widower Maxwell Sheffield of Park Avenue. In this episode, Fran returns home from Koorestan in a state of jubilation, thrilled that Maxwell has finally said "I love you." The rest of the household voices their support, though C.C., naturally, is annoyed by the development and informs Fran that Maxwell is merely stringing her along with empty words. Fran, alarmed, has a disturbing vision of the future in which Maxwell has still not made things official after several decades, though C.C. and Niles have married. However, Niles then discovers that Maxwell has already purchased an engagement ring and intends to propose to Fran very soon, and though sworn to secrecy, he quickly divulges the good news to Fran via charades.

Fran happily phones her mother with the news, and word soon spreads thanks to Sylvia's big mouth. Fran's excitement mounts when Maxwell invites her and the rest of the family to a fancy dinner at the Rainbow Room, and she urges them all to act convincingly surprised, as they are not supposed to know about the proposal. Maxwell is stuck working late, however, and he takes a quiet moment to tell his late wife Sara about his plans, sure that she is happy for him and his new love. As the hours pass with no news, C.C. smugly declares that the proposal will never really come to pass, but Fran worries that something has happened to Maxwell and hurries to the theatre, where she finds him in the alley, the victim of a mugging. Fran is horrified, particularly when she learns that the thief took the ring, but Maxwell improvises with a pop top and Fran happily accepts his thoroughly non-glamorous proposal. Commercials deleted.
