EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND: THE DOG (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a quirky Italian-American family living on Long Island, headed by sarcastic sportswriter Ray and his beleaguered wife Debra.

In this episode, Ray interviews figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, although he is uncomfortable with doing so in a woman’s locker room and is surprised when she changes clothes in front of him. Later he brings home a bulldog as a new pet, intending to surprise his family. He claims that the dog followed him home and is likely a stray, as he has no identifying collar or tag. Debra feels that they cannot support a dog at the moment and Ally does not like him, although Ray is enthusiastic about keeping him. Ray recounts that he and Robert had a similar dog when they were children, but had to give him away because of Ray’s allergies. He manages to convince Debra to allow him to keep the dog temporarily, until its real owner is found. The dog soon makes things difficult for Debra, keeping her up at night with its various antics. She calls around the neighborhood to see if anyone is missing their dog, although no dogs matching its description are reported missing. Her frustration mounts and she urges Ray to get rid of the dog, although he refuses.

Robert comes over and develops an instant affinity for the dog, recalling his childhood pet. Debra suggests that Ray give Robert the dog, but Ray is unwilling to part with it. Robert blames Ray for getting their dog sent away as children and acts downtrodden until Ray offers to give him the dog. Robert is at first hesitant but then decides to accept the dog. Robert is very appreciative towards Ray for this, giving him gifts and embodying a generally more cheerful attitude. The dog’s real owner, an old lady, arrives at Ray’s door and he is at a loss for words. Debra recognizes the woman as Phyllis, a lady who works at a local hair salon. She explains that her gardener accidentally let the dog, named “Baron,” out while she was out of town. Ray tries to explain what happened, but Debra interrupts him and promises to return Baron. Ray feels very uncomfortable with confronting Robert about this, unwilling to be responsible for taking the dog away from him.

Ray confronts Robert and hesitantly tells him that the dog’s real owner has come. Robert is heartbroken at this news but gives Ray the dog without incident. Ray returns home with Baron, feeling terrible for what he did to Robert. Debra notices that Marie and Frank had Baron neutered while he was in their care; Phyllis mentioned earlier that he is a champion breeding dog. They do their best to prevent Phyllis from discovering this. Just before she leaves, Robert arrives to drop off some toys he got for Baron. Phyllis leaves but returns moments later to yell at them for “ruin[ing]” Baron, claiming that he is now “worthless” and demanding monetary compensation. Ray offers to purchase the dog from her to give to Robert, although he nearly changes his mind when Phyllis demands a high sum for Baron. Commercials deleted.
