PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST 2015: OUTLANDER {PUBLIC SHORT VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media’s 2015 William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. The festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television’s creative community. This PALEYFEST 2015 seminar honors “Outlander,” a fantasy drama series about a World War II nurse who is transported back in time to 18th-Century Scotland.

Kristin Dos Santos (reporter, E! News) moderates the following panelists: executive producer Ronald D. Moore; Diana Gabaldon (author, “Outlander” novel series); and cast members Tobias Menzies (Frank Randall/Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall), Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser), and Caitriona Balfe (Clair Randall).

The panelists touch on such topics as: the casting process and importance of establishing chemistry between the lead actors; upcoming episodes of the series featuring an increasingly “darker” storyline; the cast’s familiarity with the novels the show is based on; differences between the novel series and the show, and the producer’s “obligation” to maintain the plot and general characteristics of the novels; comparisons between Menzies’ multiple roles; the feeling that “Outlander” has been passed over for awards such as the Emmys or Golden Globes; the “passionate” response to the television show by fans of the novels; and the mechanics of the time travel and other fantastical elements featured in the show.

Questions from the audience lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: the writing process behind the first “Outlander” novel and the reasons that Gabaldon decided to write sequels; the recent release of the first half of the show’s first season on DVD and podcasts about the show from the producers and writers; Gabaldon’s nursing experience and how it contributed to the creation of the character portrayed by Balfe; Heughan’s insistence on performing his own stunts; and the use of female writers and directors in the show and their significance to the material in terms of feminine views on sexuality.
