PERSON OF INTEREST: TERRA INCOGNITA (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic mystery series about a former CIA agent turned vigilante who works to prevent crimes in New York City with the use of a "machine" built by an enigmatic billionaire. In this episode, in a flashback, Carter joins Reese and Finch on a chilly stakeout as they monitor their latest "number," who is in danger from corrupt cops. In the present, Reese finds that two of Dominic's Brotherhood men have been killed, possibly by Elias, and wonders why the Machine did not predict their deaths. Finch informs him that another number has come up, that of Chase Patterson, suspected of murdering his entire family before fleeing to Europe in 2008. Finch recruits Root to assist him with the gang war as Reese finds that Patterson's case file was a cold case of Carter's. Back on their stakeout, Carter and Reese discuss their military experience and she dreams of someday retiring to a sunny beach, while in the present Reese finds a photo of himself and Jessica in Carter's effects. He sends Fusco to assist Finch while he visits the Patterson crime scene, and back in 2008, rookie Carter heads to the same penthouse and immediately questions the home-invasion theory, suspecting that troubled son Chase murdered his parents and two siblings for drug money.
Chase tells Carter that he was relapsing at the family cabin in the Catskills at the time of the murders, explaining how his mother supported him through his first experience with rehab. He tells Reese the same story in the present, though he cannot offer another logical suspect. Carter tells her partner Terney that she believes Chase's innocence despite the familial DNA match at the scene, and she heads to the cabin to corroborate his story. Root "questions" Carlo, the man who killed the Brotherhood members, and finds that it was indeed a crime of opportunity, and Reese heads to the Pattersons' cabin alone, driving out of the Machine's range. On the stakeout, Reese turns up the car's heat as tells Carter that there is "no 'after' for people like us," but she points out that he can still change his path, as she once did, and suggests that he needs to tell his "real stories" to a true friend. In 2008, Carter hears someone at the cabin but then learns that Chase has absconded to Paris, while in the present Reese catches Chase there, though Chase swears that he is being set up and Reese is suddenly shot by another man, Gil, who reveals himself to be Chase's half-brother. He admits to killing the family in revenge for his father's rejection and then forces Chase to overdose, informing him that he has eight hours to live. Gil tells Reese that "his number is up" and drags him outside, but Reese reaches for his ankle holster just in time.
Carter questions Reese's true intentions for himself on the night they met, and when he begins to explain about Jessica, she tells him that he is dying, revealing that he shot Gil but is now slowly freezing to death in the car and hallucinating her presence. Elsewhere, Finch, Root and Fusco attempt to search for the missing "Wonder Boy," and Reese finds that the car has stalled because of the cold. He finally tells Carter about the traumatic wartime encounter that spurred him to end things with Jessica, as he believed himself to be "better at his job" if he had no personal connections. He points out that he had a meaningful bond with Carter herself, but she sadly tells him that they did not truly have a heart-to-heart conversation and that she saved the photo for a day that never came. He tells her that he pursued the Patterson case alone as a way of feeling close to her once again, and she urges him to save himself and "let people in," pointing out that he now has family who loves him. As a car finally drives up to his rescue, he finds that Carter has vanished. Commercials deleted.
