SUPER SOUL SUNDAY: OPRAH AND DR. MAYA ANGELOU {PART 1 OF 2} {SIXTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The sixth season premiere in this series of conversation self-help programs hosted by Oprah Winfrey. In the first half of this two-part episode, Winfrey talks with her longtime mentor and "mother-sister-friend," writer and activist Maya Angelou. The conversation touches on such topics as: their very first conversation, in which a twentysomething Winfrey actively pursued an interview with the famous Angelou and impressed her with her intelligent questions; Angelou's career as a singer, as seen in a 1957 clip of her singing "Run Joe" for the film "Calypso Heat Wave"; the "mental gymnastics" of forgiving her rapist and sense that forgiveness makes one "lighter"; the "pizzazz" of her outspoken mother Vivian Baxter, as explored in the seventh volume of her autobiography series, "Mom & Me & Mom"; Angelou's desire to become the first black female streetcar conductor at age sixteen and Baxter's firm advice about securing the job; her many honorary "daughters," including Winfrey; her feelings upon receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama in 2011; Winfrey's sense of "validation" in reading Angelou's famous 1969 autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings"; her complex but ultimately empowering relationship with Baxter; her son Guy Johnson as her "greatest blessing"; a harrowing memory of being beaten and kidnapped by a boyfriend and then rescued by her formidable mother; her favorite and least favorite words; her strict attitude towards offensive language and slurs; and the importance of developing courage to stand up to "poisonous" comments from others. The program concludes with Angelou reading her own poem "Phenomenal Woman." Commercials deleted.
