CHRIS ROCK SHOW, THE {CONAN O'BRIEN, WYCLEF JEAN} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of nighttime talk shows hosted by Chris Rock. This episode features guest appearances by comedian and late-night host Conan O'Brien and musical performer Wyclef Jean. The program opens with Rock discussing his "audition" for the show and the fortitude of his having the same name as the title, though David Alan Grier notes that he would have been a better choice. In his opening monologue, Rock comments on the following topics: AL Sharpton's loss in the mayoral race; a bizarre idea for monetary rewards for competent NYPD officers; rumors that Paula Jones possesses explicit photographs of President Clinton; a university's creation of a "Tupac class"; and Johnnie Cochran's representation of infamous police brutality victim Abner Louima. Rock then announces that he has received his "honorary GED," and he delivers a speech in front of his disinterested classmates about their not-so-promising futures.
O'Brien then joins Rock onstage and discusses the following: their "feud" as rival late-night hosts; his height and lack of physical coordination; how he feigns talent at basketball; and his awkward "half-Archie, half-Jughead" teen years. He then performs a brief stand-up routine featuring some "edgy" new material dissimilar from his usual comedy style on his NBC show. Next, in a commercial spot, "self-made millionaire Malcolm Monroe" describes how he acquired his millions through homemade lottery tickets. Finally, Wyclef Jean performs "Gone Till November" with the Urban Youth Symphony.
