CRISTELA: DEAD ARM (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a young Mexican-American woman working as an intern at a law firm.
Cristela learns that one of Isabella’s classmates is picking on her and gives Isabella advice on how to deal with it, believing that she should defend herself. Everyone else tells Cristela not to worry about it and that it is a “phase,” although she feels strongly about it due to recollections of her own childhood when she was similarly bullied. Cristela reminds Daniela of a girl she used to bully, although Daniela denies any wrongdoing. At work, Cristela asks her co-workers for advice, but does not receive anything helpful. That night she discovers that Isabella’s conflict with her classmate has grown more intense, and that they are attacking each other physically. The school asks for a parent-teacher conference to resolve the matter, and Cristela offers to go with Daniela, believing that she has not gotten over her own bullying behavior and requires another opinion.
At the parent-teacher conference they meet their old principal, Mr. Alvarez, who is very fond of Cristela but disdainful towards Daniela. Mr. Alvarez blames Daniela for Isabella’s problems, and Cristela agrees, but Mr. Alvarez also believes that the rest of the family is also a bad influence on Isabella’s behavior, particularly Felix. They get home that night and call a family meeting to discuss the issue. They use information given to them by Mr. Alvarez to discuss means of expressing themselves without hurting other people’s feelings. However, everyone has difficulty keeping their anger towards each other in check and Cristela says that everyone needs to take responsibility for enabling an atmosphere of negativity. Isabella herself says she was only following Cristela’s advice, earning Cristela the scorn of everyone else.
Cristela feels indignant at the suggestion that she is a bully herself and denies the notion despite the contrary opinions of her co-workers. She is surprised to learn that they think of her as being constantly sarcastic and dismissive, and comes to a realization about the impact her behavior has on those around her. She passes on this epiphany to Isabella, explaining that she always felt the need to be “tough” and defend herself since she was the first person in the family to attend college, engendering a sense of competitiveness. They realize that they both need to distinguish the difference between defending themselves and bullying and each resolve to work on it. Includes commercials.
