FRESH OFF THE BOAT: PHILLIP GOLDSTEIN (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series, inspired by the memoir by chef Eddie Huang, about a Taiwanese immigrant family and their attempts to build a "perfect" American life in 1990s Florida.
In this episode, Jessica firmly denies Eddie's pleas to attend a Beastie Boys concert, lamenting his refusal to be "a good Chinese boy" with more traditional preferences. Later, he is pleased when he is assigned to be a "first-day friend" to a new student of Chinese descent, but he quickly finds that he and the preppy Phillip Goldstein, who was adopted by Jewish parents, have nothing in common. Despite their obvious dislike for one another, their teachers continually pair up the "best friends" for class activities. Elsewhere, Louis holds interviews to replace Mitch, who has taken a "lateral position" at Golden Saddle, and is delighted when genuine cowboy Wyatt arrives and accepts the host job.
Jessica immediately begins fawning over "perfect" Phillip, and Eddie turns his resentment to his advantage by claiming that Phillip, too, wishes to attend the Beastie Boys concert, thus changing Jessica's mind. Louis quickly realizes that Wyatt is "a little too perfect" and agrees to hire Mitch back, but finds that he cannot bring himself to coldly fire his new employee. Over dinner with the Goldsteins, Eddie is surprised when Phillip goes along with his lie about the concert; Phillip then reveals that he wishes to attend a matinee of "Les Misérables" on the same day and needs Eddie's help in circumventing the rules of Shabbat, to which his family strictly adheres. Jessica refuses to be Louis' "bad cop," and his attempts to practice "firing" Evan and Emery fall flat. Phillip decides to bail on Eddie's concert upon realizing that Shabbat ended by the conclusion of "Les Miz." A shocked Jessica scolds him for breaking his word, realizing that he is not a "good Chinese boy" after all. She then grudgingly takes Eddie to the following night's Beastie Boys concert, and Eddie bonds with a fellow student over their love of the group. Elsewhere, Louis eventually finds the right incentive to provoke Mitch into firing his "co-host." Includes commercials and promos.
