HANNIBAL: COQUILLES (TV)

Summary

One in this suspenseful drama series, based on the books by Thomas Harris, about FBI Special Agent Will Graham and his complex relationship with psychologist -- and cannibalistic serial killer -- Hannibal Lecter. In this episode, Will is pursued by the mysterious stag and is found by police sleepwalking through the roads of Wolf Trap. Hannibal suggests that he is suffering from PTSD from the disturbing crime scenes, hinting that Jack has manipulated him into a "devil's bargain" and is pushing his psyche too far. A couple is then found murdered at a Trenton motel, posed in a kneeling position with their backs grotesquely flayed apart to resemble angels' wings. Will speculates that the killer believed himself to be "elevating them," while elsewhere Hannibal serves dinner to Jack and his wife Phyllis, known as "Bella." She objects to his dish as "too cruel," though he assures her that he employs an "ethical butcher" and hints at his own uncannily observant sense of smell. Katz, Price and Zeller soon determine that the motel killer has a fatal brain tumor, and Will guesses that he is afraid of death and created the angel-like figures to "watch over him."

Bella visits Hannibal at his office, and they have a cryptic conversation about her choice to keep a secret from Jack, as she feels that he is already too troubled by his upsetting job to handle another dark surprise. Will considers that the Angel-Maker feels "abandoned," and Hannibal suggests that Will feels similarly about Jack, while at home Jack attempts to talk to a reluctant Bella about her unhappiness and hints at his fear that she is having an affair. Another "angel" is found in Cleveland, along with the unsettling evidence that the killer has castrated himself, and Will and Jack uncharacteristically argue when Jack pushes Will to come up with an accurate profile of the perpetrator. Surprised by their outbursts, Katz questions Will, who asks her if he seems "different," and Price and Zeller then reveal that the motel couple and the Cleveland victim were all dangerous criminals themselves, suggesting that the Angel-Maker believes himself to be doing "God's work" in transforming them.

Bella visits Hannibal again and acknowledges that she has advanced cancer, though feels strangely well and does not yet feel "betrayed" by her body. Will sleepwalks again, this time onto his own roof, and Hannibal again compares Will to the Angel-Maker, pointing out that they both feel tricked by their own minds and desire a sense of peace. Zeller determines that the Angel-Maker is likely one Elliot Buddish, and as his estranged wife Emma describes how he behaved strangely and pulled away from her after his cancer diagnosis, Jack appears to come to a heartbreaking realization. Emma reveals that Elliot once had a near-death experience at his childhood home, and once there, Jack and Will find that Elliot has ended his life and transformed himself into an angel as well. Will finally protests that his gruesome profiling work is "bad for him," though Jack argues that he has a responsibility to use his skills to prevent future deaths, and Will has a disturbing vision in which Elliot speaks to him and offers to "bring it out of him," as he did the other victims. Jack finds Bella at Hannibal's office, and she explains that she has stage-four lung cancer and may eschew chemotherapy, admitting that she does not feel entirely comforted by his vow to support her. Later, Will finds Jack and sits by his side, quietly offering to listen to his troubles despite their conflict. Commercials deleted.
