KEY & PEELE'S SUPER BOWL SPECIAL (TV)
Summary
This special, airing between the fourth and fifth seasons of the sketch comedy series "Key & Peele," features comedians Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele's satirical take on Super Bowl XLIX between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots.
Sports commentators and former football-star frenemies Bertram Skilling and Dante Pibb sit down to discuss the upcoming game, though at a press conference, Seahawks player Richard Sherman is too distracted by his frustration over the Academy Award nominations to talk about football. Skilling and Pibb touch upon a number of tenuous "connections" between various players and other famous figures, and a number of unusually-named aspiring players, including Ha'Sean "Ha Ha" Clinton-Dix and "Myriad Profiteroles," present themselves in the East/West Pro Bowl Edition segment. In a series of "Heard That!" segments, players are made to wear microphones "like mafia informants" while on the field, usually leading to embarrassing disasters. Wisdom Caldwell and Brunswick Smith join the anchors to discuss "the invisible war" of huddle smack-talk, with Skilling noting players' use of "abusive language and whatnot" to disorient their opponents, though Caldwell and Smith have some other, more bizarre suggestions.
Marshawn Lynch of the Seahawks offers his opinions on the game as Sherman continues complaining about the Oscars, and when commentator Harry Peters joins Skilling and Pibb, they notice a racial slant to the effusive terms, ranging from "intelligent" to "a freak of nature," that he employs to describe various players. In the Rookie Combine, one player finds an innovative way of lowering his race time, and in the "60 For 60" segment, two "scout scouts" describe their methods of determining the best individuals to find the best players. Wisdom and Smith reappear for another chat, but Skilling and Pibb end up fighting as they defend their respective careers, with Pibb trying to steal Skilling's beloved Super Bowl ring. They are distracted when their robot mascot Enos suddenly becomes self-aware. Some time later, Enos and the other robots have taken over the world, and a terrified and trapped Skilling and Pibb attempt to continue reporting on "cyber football" to appease their overlords, particularly their "digital deity" and star of many noteworthy series Allison Janney.
