MUSEUM OF BROADCASTING'S 6TH ANNUAL TELEVISION FESTIVAL IN LOS ANGELES, THE: EVENING PRIMROSE {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's Sixth Annual Television Festival in Los Angeles. (The Museum was known at that time as The Museum of Broadcasting.) Presented with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community.
This evening honors composer Stephen Sondheim's original work for television -- a musical fantasy set in a department store after hours. Adapted by James Goldman from a John Collier short story and produced in 1966 as part of "ABC Stage 67," the musical "Evening Primrose" features Anthony Perkins, Charmian Carr, and Dorothy Stickney; Paul Bogart directed, and John Houseman served as executive producer. This tape presents the panel discussion and question-and-answer segment with Anthony Perkins and Bogart that preceded the screening of "Evening Primrose."
After introductory remarks by Ron Haver of the Los Angeles County Museum and by Museum of Broadcasting president Robert M. Batscha, Perkins and Bogart discuss the following topics, among others: Charmian Carr's short-lived career; the tight production schedule that led to many improvisational touches in the program; David Shire's work on the piece; the cameo appearances of several older actors; technical reasons for the show's combination of live singing and lip-synching to prerecorded music; Perkins's experience working with Frank Loesser on "Greenwillow"; possible reasons for Stephen Sondheim to have taken a break from Broadway after "Do I Hear A Waltz?" and "Anyone Can Whistle"; the unpolished and experimental quality of the show, thanks to its low budget and rushed schedule; and the filming style used on "Stage 67," which did not in the panelists' view suit "Evening Primrose."
