227: WASHINGTON AFFAIR (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series based on the play by Christine Houston about opinionated Chicago housewife Mary Jenkins and her many friends and neighbors. In this episode, Sandra boasts to her friends about her latest beau, a prominent congressman, adding that she has invited him over for a home-cooked meal. Her attempts to follow Mary's recipe quickly go awry, however, and Mary and Lester are forced to allow the couple to join their dinner party, having already invited Brenda's art teacher over for the evening. Lester and the congressman, Rivers, are very pleased to meet the intelligent and comely Miss Betty Mumphry, and Calvin too attempts to impress her with his "artistic" airs. Rivers seems taken with Betty and invites her to a high-society reception event, though a jealous Sandra quickly gets herself invited as well.
Sandra drags Mary along to the soirée, though Mary is alarmed to learn that she must pretend to be a Caribbean Prime Minister to gain entrance. She and Sandra are thrilled when they run into Billy Dee Williams, and Sandra's jealousy mounts as Betty arrives with Rivers and impresses everyone with her knowledge of ancient Greek art. Lester arrives to pick up Mary and is surprised to find his "politician" wife chatting with Billy Dee, and Sandra proves to be the life of the party when a dance number breaks out. She is saddened when Rivers decides that her prefers Betty after all and departs the event with her, but she quickly rebounds with Billy Dee himself, much to her friends' amusement. Commercials deleted.
