CRISTELA: HALL-OATES-WEEN (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a young Mexican-American woman working as an intern at a law firm.

Cristela is required to go to her office’s Halloween party, and she offers to help spruce up the party with her skill as a “party whisperer.” She seeks someone to be the other half of her “couples costume,” but finds herself reluctantly forced to take Maddie when no one else agrees. She criticizes Daniela’s costume for being too revealing, although they do not recognize her own costume, that of John Oates from Hall & Oates. Natalia dislikes American Halloween traditions and tries to get her children and grandchildren to celebrate the Day of the Dead instead. Cristela arrives at her party and finds the atmosphere quite boring and tepid, and that the “Hall” to her “Oates” has not yet arrived. Trent feels competitive with his wife over who has a better Halloween party and gives Cristela free rein to improve it. Maddie arrives and Cristela is frustrated that she did not follow her advice about choosing a non-“sexy” costume, particularly since people are still unable to recognize them. The preponderance of “naughty” female costumes at the party further frustrates her.

Alberto visits Natalia and tries to get her into the Halloween spirit. She tries to drive away trick-or-treaters with tales about her dead relatives, but they mistake her for a “witch” telling “ghost stories” and encourage others to come. Cristela attempts to disentangle herself from Maddie, explaining that she feels that she has no chance with Josh if he is interested in “one of them” (i.e. a woman dressed in a revealing Halloween costume). Maddie believes that Cristela is insecure about herself, and Cristela starts to leave. However, she changes her mind when the rest of the party nearly walks out on a dejected Trent, delivering a rousing speech to her co-workers and announces that she is going to sing a song she wrote when she was thirteen dedicated to John Oates. Despite the embarrassing nature of this display, it seems to work and the assembled guests are reinvigorated, although they attribute it to the party’s “hot chicks” and not to Cristela.

Later, Trent congratulates Cristela in his office and says that he too felt insecure. She feels that he is the only one who recognized her efforts, and he says that she should not be too concerned about her appearance compared to the “hot girls,” as in his estimation she has greater worth. Maddie invites her to the after-party and says she “needs” her, and Cristela is happy to oblige. Daniela and company come home to find a group of children enraptured by Natalia’s stories, much to their amazement. Includes commercials.
