GOLDBERGS, THE: A GOLDBERG THANKSGIVING (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a dysfunctional Pennsylvania family in the 1980s.

In this episode, the family prepares to celebrate their many unique Thanksgiving traditions, starting with Beverly's obsessive day-long cooking spree, using her mother's old recipes. When Erica teases her about her pre-meal Jazzercise session, Beverly challenges her daughter to join her at a workout class, agreeing that Erica can avoid helping with dinner entirely if she makes it through. Murray scoffs at Adam's plans to play video games all day. The boys are thrilled by the arrival of their Uncle Marvin, who impresses them with talk of his job as a beeper salesman and eagerly joins Adam in his game-playing. Beverly is dismayed when Erica survives the Jazzercise class with ease. Marvin, after taking Adam to a screening of "The Wizard," annoys Murray further by suggesting that his nephew drop out of school and pursue a full-time "career" of playing video games. Adam is overjoyed when his uncle gifts him with a Nintendo Power Glove, and Pops observes that Murray is growing jealous of his underachieving brother's bond with his son. Murray attempts to connect with Adam on his level and play games with him, but he ends up making things far worse when he damages the Power Glove.

At the same time, a desperate Beverly challenges Erica to double or nothing, but she ends up pulling a sensitive muscle during their competitive "power-walk." Murray and Beverly fret that they have truly "lost" their children. When Barry attempts to take over the cooking duties, he uses the "nerd glove" to remove the turkey's innards, much to Adam's horror. Marvin announces that he intends to take Adam to video-game competitions around the country, as seen in "The Wizard"; when Barry and Erica seem prepared to give up on the family celebrations, an angered Beverly accidentally reveals her charade about loving the holiday. Adam admits that he simply appreciated his uncle's interest in his passion, and Pops gives Erica an "adorable, wise lecture" about Beverly, explaining that she lost her own mother at an early age and makes use of her recipes to feel close to her. Murray admits that he is envious of his brother's bond with Adam. He is relieved to learn that Marvin has been exaggerating his recent personal successes and is still the less-impressive Goldberg brother. Beverly and Erica pull off an excellent meal at the last second, and Pops gives a touching toast to his late wife as they all sit down to dinner. Later, Barry makes use of his beeper to forge a new career path. Includes commercials and promos.
