VIEW, THE {GUEST HOST: LAVERNE COX; TONY BENNETT, LADY GAGA, "DANCING WITH THE STARS" RUNNERS-UP AND WINNERS} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of daytime talk shows hosted by a multi-generational group of women, presided over by actress Whoopi Goldberg and including political commentator Nicolle Wallace and actress Rosie Perez. This episode also features guest host Laverne Cox of Netflix's "Orange is the New Black."
The hosts open the program by discussing the day's "hot topics": George Stephanopoulos' interview with Darren Wilson, the Ferguson, Missouri police officer who shot and killed teenager Mike Brown in August 2014; Cox's feelings on the "deeply painful" trend of police brutality against unarmed African-Americans; inconsistencies between the forensic evidence and Wilson's claims of fearing for his life before discharging his weapon; Wilson's lack of "humanity" in describing the events of the shooting and why he has a "clean conscience"; why he did not shoot the teenager non-fatally to protect himself; themes of implicit bias and racially-based flaws in the justice system; and why all policemen should wear body cameras. Perez comments on the recent peaceful protest near the Lincoln Tunnel, centered around Brown's death and other victims of police violence, though Goldberg suggests that blocking traffic and inconveniencing those not involved in such crimes is "counterproductive," with comparisons to the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Cox then briefly discusses her documentary film "Free CeCe!" (2016), which profiles CeCe McDonald, a black transgender woman who was arrested and placed in a men's prison after defending herself during a violent hate crime.
Next, special guests Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett take the stage and discuss their first meeting at a charity event; her praise for his many artistic interests, including music; their recent duet album "Cheek to Cheek," through which Bennett became the oldest artist to have an album debut at #1 on the Billboard charts; why he has never retired from music; Perez's story of bonding with her father over Bennett's music; a birthday surprise from Gaga for Bennett's 88th; and Bennett's habit of sketching his talented colleague. The two then perform "Cheek to Cheek."
Finally, the hosts welcome Janel Parrish and Valentin Chmerkovskiy, the third-place winners of the most recent season of "Dancing With the Stars," who dodge questions about their rumored romance before performing the foxtrot and the paso doble. The second-place winners, Sadie Robertson and Mark Ballas, comment on their time on the show and then dance the samba, and first-place winners Alfonso Ribeiro and Witney Carson take the stage with their trophies and perform a number of their own. Includes commercials and promos.
