BLACK-ISH: OEDIPAL TRIANGLE (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about an affluent black family and their attempts to maintain their cultural identity.

In this episode, Dre happily prepares for a visit from his domineering mother Ruby, though Rainbow is less thrilled, as she has long felt that Ruby is "out to get her." Ruby arrives with highly inappropriate gifts for the children and several passive-aggressive remarks for Rainbow, though Dre remains blissfully unaware of the problem. At school, Zoey spots Junior spending time with an uncool girl and urges him to set his sights on the pretty and popular Kyra Kang-Nussbaum instead. She promises that she will use her own social status to arrange a date. Back at home, Ruby prepares a delicious but high-calorie meal for the family, and Rainbow's frustration mounts when her mother-in-law makes a pointed comment about her decision to see a therapist in the past. She demands to know why Dre has chosen to share her private business with his mother. Dre later draws a romantic bath for himself and his wife as a "peace offering." Ruby distracts him with her theatrical coughing, however, and Rainbow is outraged to find that he has abandoned their date night for a "nap" with his mother.

At work, Dre's friends inform him that his behavior is indeed unusual and that he must make both women feel "equally loved" to keep the peace. Zoey teaches Junior how to properly impress the glamorous Kyra, and he somehow succeeds in landing a date with her. Rainbow is touched when Dre surprises her with dinner at their "special spot," though she is irked to learn that he shared an equally memorable moment with Ruby at the same place. The two women unexpectedly bond over their frustrations with him and Dre enjoys "sixteen hours of peace." That ceases when Ruby changes Diane's hairstyle without permission, sparking another argument with Rainbow. Rainbow panics over her mother-in-law's inexplicable power. Meanwhile, Junior triumphantly returns from his date, though Zoey quickly realizes that Kyra "used his nerdiness" for personal gain. Ruby and Rainbow squabble anew when Rainbow realizes that Dre shared yet another of their marital secrets with his mother. Zoey finally explains to her father that he can only have one "number-one" woman in his life at a time, according to the "natural order." Dre considers her advice and eventually tells his mother that despite his strong love for her, his wife is now his "number one." She accepts his words, but grudgingly. Includes commercials.
