MURPHY BROWN: ALL IN THE FAMILY (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about Murphy Brown, a high-profile, successful broadcast newswoman, and her colleagues at the news magazine "FYI." In this episode, Murphy annoys her co-workers with requests for donations to the museum, and Miles is irked to realize that his colleagues do not necessarily view his impulsive marriage to Corky as "real." Corky admits that she too is having trouble adjusting to the sudden change, and they decide to hold an official wedding ceremony to seal the deal. Miles is jubilant when the two finally share a "wedding night" slightly ahead of schedule, and his Nana Silverberg soon arrives at the office and happily greets her grandson's friends and wife/fiancée. When Corky's extended family arrives from the South, though, she confesses to Murphy that she has not told them of the true meaning of their visit, aware that her old-fashioned grandfather will not approve of her abrupt marriage to a Jewish man.

A frustrated Murphy is forced to help keep the two families apart while simultaneously trying to arrange the ceremony and reception, which are being held in her home. When the two families arrive, Colonel Sherwood begins arguing with Nana Silverberg about her "pinko" political views, and Corky desperately tries to stop the fight by blurting out the truth about the wedding. Both sides immediately voice their disapproval, but Miles firmly states that they love one another and the ceremony is going ahead no matter what. In the car, however, they begin to fret that their relatives are right about their mismatched, last-second union. On the day of the wedding, Murphy sternly orders the squabbling relatives to "act like family" and fake their happiness for the couple's sake, though Miles is not fooled. However, he and Corky decide that they are willing to take the risk and carry on with the marriage despite their doubts, and they recite their vows and have a "private" ceremony of sorts in the midst of their battling families.
