CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND: JOSH JUST HAPPENS TO LIVE HERE! {SERIES PREMIERE} {UNAIRED VERSION} (TV)

Summary

The first in this musical comedy series about a troubled and eccentric young lawyer who goes to extreme measures to reconnect with a former flame. In this episode, in 2005, young Rebecca Bunch is stunned when her beloved boyfriend of two months, Josh, awkwardly breaks up with her as they depart summer camp. Ten years later, Rebecca is a successful lawyer living in New York City, and though she learns that she is soon to be promoted to junior partner, she begins to suffer an existential crisis, wondering if she is "truly happy." She then unexpectedly runs into Josh, who reveals that he is dissatisfied with the "rat race" of NYC and is moving back home to tranquil West Covina, California, noting that he "let a good one get away" when he dumped her. Inspired, Rebecca turns down the offer of partner and moves to West Covina to restart her life, declaring in song that she is doing so to improve her life and definitely not solely because of Josh, who "just happens to be there."

Once in California, Rebecca ignores a call from her overbearing mother and sends Josh a "casual" text message, though he fails to respond. She soon takes a job at a law firm under the eccentric Darryl Whitefeather, much to the annoyance of head paralegal Paula, who is suspicious of her high qualifications and big-city demeanor. Rebecca then receives a text alert that Josh is nearby at a ballpark, and upon arriving she meets bartender Greg, who just happens to know her ex. Greg explains that he and Josh are attending the same house party on the following night and invites Rebecca along as his date, and she eagerly accepts. She undergoes several painful grooming rituals during her "sexy getting-ready song," and once at the party, she feigns romantic interest in a doubtful Greg to convince him that Josh is merely an "old friend." However, Greg then reveals that Josh is not coming after all and has a girlfriend despite his "single" Facebook status, and Rebecca is crushed. Paula suddenly arrives and confronts her about her obsessive behavior, but when Rebecca begins to panic that she is indeed "crazy," Paula reassures her and vows to help her reconnect with Josh after all. They conclude that he is "not really into" his so-called girlfriend, and Rebecca is elated when he finally returns her text and asks her to have dinner. Greg, however, is left all alone at the party. Commercials deleted.
