GRANDFATHERED: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The pilot of this comedy series about a bachelor restaurateur trying to connect with both his son from a one-night stand and his infant granddaughter.
Jimmy Martino, a successful restaurateur, is approached by a young man named Gerald, who claims to be his son with Sara, a woman he dated in the late 1980s, who discovered she was pregnant after they broke up. Gerald reveals that he also has a newborn daughter, Edie, making Jimmy a grandfather. Jimmy is taken aback by the news, as he enjoys his bachelor lifestyle and is unsure if he wants a family. Gerald feels awkward about the encounter and they agree to meet at an unspecified later date. When restaurant staffers are disappointed that Jimmy is not more welcoming to his family, Jimmy stops Gerald from leaving and holds Edie in his arms.
Jimmy takes the opportunity to confront Sara, who says that Gerald only recently inquired about his father. She recalls how badly he treated her during their relationship and explains that she did not inform him of Gerald’s existence since he likely wouldn't care about him. She explains that Gerald now lives in her guest house. Jimmy spends time with Gerald and Edie, although he is rather awkward around them. Edie’s mother Vanessa then arrives to pick her up, referring to Gerald as her “friend.” Gerald admits that one reason he contacted Jimmy was the hope that he could help convince Vanessa to be more than “friends” with him. Jimmy believes that he would be well suited to this task, and gives Gerald advice about his personality, appearance, and demeanor.
That night, Jimmy discovers that Sara is a therapist. She feels that Jimmy is still unsuited to parenthood and asks him to leave her house; she admits, however, that she is grateful that he has decided to connect with Gerald. The next day, Gerald arrives at the restaurant to ask Jimmy to watch Edie for him while he goes out with Vanessa. At first Edie proves to be quite difficult for Jimmy, but eventually becomes affectionate with him. However, he is informed that former athlete Deion Sanders and a troupe of celebrities have unexpectedly arrived at his eatery, requiring his presence. He arrives, sequestering Edie in the kitchen behind an improvised barrier. He is forced to alternate between caring for Edie and attending to the celebrity guests. He soon discovers that Edie has a fever and rushes her to a hospital.
At the hospital, Jimmy admits to Sara that he has failed as a family man, though stating that he “wanted to be good at this.” Sara assures Jimmy that “parenthood is an endless string of moments when you think you’ve killed your kid,” and assures him that his concern is natural. When Gerald and Vanessa arrive, the doctor informs them that Edie has recovered. They then opt to go back to Jimmy’s apartment for a late-night meal. Commercials deleted.
