GAME OF THRONES: THE CLIMB (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic fantasy series, based on the book series by George R.R. Martin, about the warring royal families of Westeros.
In this episode, Sam observes his dragonglass dagger and regales Gilly with tales of the Wall and Castle Black, while elsewhere Bran tries to quell Osha and Meera's squabbling as Jojen has a vision of Jon "on the wrong side of the Wall." As the Wildings prepare to scale the immense Wall, Ygritte firmly reminds Jon that, Crow or not, he now owes her his loyalty as her lover. Anguy offers Arya some archery tips, and when Melisandre joins the Brotherhood Without Banners, she is stunned to learn that the Lord of Light, via Thoros, has revived Beric an unprecedented six times. Still, he assures her that "there is no other side." Arya is outraged when Thoros sells Gendry, who has Robert's royal blood, to the "witch," and Melisandre observes that Arya is destined to take many lives. The mysterious boy – Ramsay Snow, a.k.a. Ramsay Bolton – continues torturing Theon, who desperately and incorrectly guesses that he is a Karstark seeking revenge for his betrayal of Robb and House Stark.
Robb meets with the Freys, who explain that Walder requires a "formal apology" for his marriage to Talisa, namely ownership of Harrenhal and the marriage of Robb's uncle Edmure to one of his many daughters. Roose Bolton decides that Jaime – but not Brienne – will be sent back to Tywin in King's Landing, while elsewhere Olenna Tyrell firmly rejects the idea of marrying Loras to Cersei, suggesting that she is too old to bear him children. She is dismissive when Tywin coldly points out Loras' homosexuality, countering that sibling incest is considered far worse a crime. Tywin threatens to make Loras a member of the celibate Kingsguard, meaning that the Tyrell name will die with him when Margaery is wed to Joffrey and presumably bears so-called Lannister children; Olenna is then forced to consent.
The Wildings' perilous ascent of the Wall nearly comes to tragedy when some of the ice begins to crumble, but Jon daringly saves both himself and Ygritte. Loras and Sansa, still believing themselves engaged, share an awkward chat. Confronting Cersei, Tyrion learns that it was Joffrey who gave Ser Mandon the order to kill him during the Battle of the Blackwater. Tyrion also realizes that Joffrey may still have murderous designs against him. Tyrion is then forced to break the bad news to Sansa – and to Shae – that he and Sansa are to be married. Baelish informs Varys that he gave Ros, Varys' spy, to Joffrey, who then murdered her for sheer sadistic amusement. Baelish explains that "chaos is a ladder" that can only be mastered by the cleverest. At the Wall, Jon and Ygritte share a romantic moment as they finally reach the top and survey the Seven Kingdoms.
