Summary
One in a series of seminars presented by The Paley Center for Media in New York. This seminar honors “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” the comedic horror series based on the “Evil Dead” film series about a man fighting against horrific monsters unleashed by the Necronomicon, an ancient tome of black magic.
Abraham Riesman (online journalist, Vulture.com) moderates the following panelists: executive producer and director Sam Raimi; executive producer and cast member Bruce Campbell (Ash Williams); executive producer Craig DiGregorio; and cast members Dana Delorenzo (Kelly Maxwell), Ray Santiago (Pablo Simon Bolivar), Jill Marie Jones (Amanda Fisher), and Lucy Lawless (Ruby Knowby).
The panelists touch on such topics as: Campbell’s thoughts on returning to his “Evil Dead” character after many years of fan requests to do so; the extensive levels of violence, action, and blood present in the series; the show’s conceptual origins and how it relates to the enduring cult popularity of the “Evil Dead” films; the casts’ feelings about performing alongside Campbell; production difficulties caused by the fake blood used by the crew; the desire to “fix” aspects of the old films which the creators feel they could improve upon given their years of experience since the making of the “Evil Dead” films; Raimi’s provocative directorial techniques; and the necessity of humor as a component in “Ash vs. Evil Dead.”
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: Campbell’s memoir and a potential follow-up; Lawless’s view of her character as “intransigent”; the long professional relationship between Raimi, Campbell, and Lawless; the show’s fight choreography; the inclusion of Raimi’s prized automobile in the show; and Raimi and Campbell’s appreciation for old “Three Stooges” films.
