GAME OF THRONES: THE LAWS OF GOD AND MEN (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic fantasy series, based on the book series by George R.R. Martin, about the warring royal families of Westeros.

In this episode, Stannis and Davos arrive in Braavos to secure a loan from the Iron Bank; Tycho Nestoris seems disinclined to believe Stannis' claim to the throne and declines the request, citing Stannis' lack of men and resources. Davos, however, insists that backing Stannis is a far safer bet than counting on the elderly Tywin to pay back his gold. Nestoris relents, allowing Davos to recruit his pirate pal Salladhor Saan. Elsewhere, Yara leads the Ironborn to attack the Dreadfort to rescue her brother, but Theon, severely traumatized and brainwashed by Ramsay's torture, frantically insists that he is "Reek" and resists her help, leading Yara to conclude that her brother is "dead." Ramsay "rewards" his loyal prisoner with a bath, revealing that he will need Theon's help in taking back Moat Cailin.

In Meereen, Daenerys promises to repay a goatherd whose animals were taken by a hungry Drogon, but she is taken aback when Hizdahr zo Loraq insists that his father was wrongly crucified as a slaver and was strongly against the practice. She allows him to give his father a proper burial. In King's Landing, Varys informs the small council that the Hound has been spotted roaming the Riverlands and that Daenerys is currently ruling over Meereen; Tywin insists that she must be "dealt with" soon. Varys and Oberyn discuss their differing views on personal desire. As Tyrion's trial commences, Tommen formally recuses himself, leaving Tywin, Oberyn and Mace Tyrell as the three judges. Several witnesses confirm that Joffrey was poisoned by "the Strangler," a substance found within Sansa's necklace left behind on Ser Dontos' body. Cersei recalls Tyrion's threatening words to her before the Battle of the Blackwater, while Tyrion's sometimes-friend Varys suggests that Tyrion's loyalties shifted to Robb Stark after his marriage to Sansa.

Jaime angrily confronts his father about the "farce" of a trial, reminding Tywin that he saved his life by slaughtering the Mad King; he bargains with his father to spare his brother's life, promising that he will leave the Kingsguard and carry on the Lannister name with a proper marriage and children in Casterly Rock if Tyrion is allowed to join the Night's Watch. Jaime urges Tyrion to humbly beg for mercy – as Ned Stark did – but Tyrion is shocked when his lover Shae takes the stand and falsely claims that he and Sansa plotted Joffrey's murder, describing in embarrassing detail how she was "forced" to go along with his intimate demands. Enraged, Tyrion declares that his only "crime" is being a dwarf, for which he has been unfairly persecuted his entire life. He continues that he is happy about Joffrey's gruesome death and has similar loathing for his entire treacherous family. As the crowd reacts with shock, he demands an official trial by combat to decide his fate.
