FRESH OFF THE BOAT: HUANGSGIVING (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series, inspired by the memoir by chef Eddie Huang, about a Taiwanese immigrant family and their attempts to build a "perfect" American life in 1990s Florida. In this episode, Jessica is thrilled when her bribery efforts are successful and her mother finally selects her, not her competitive sister Connie, to host the family Thanksgiving dinner. Louis outlines his plans to create a memorable "Huangsgiving," complete with individual Cornish hens and a rousing game of Monopoly, though Eddie is more interested in bonding with his grunge-loving cousin Justin. When the holiday arrives, Steve drives up separately and Connie dramatically announces that their marriage is "on the rocks," though Jessica is sure that her sister is merely trying to "steal focus," as ever. Louis spends time with his brother-in-law and ends up getting too drunk to remember his meal-prep duties, and Justin, having decided that "grunge is dead," tries to teach Eddie about the romantic wonders of the Internet.

Louis rushes out to get a frozen turkey when the Cornish hens arrive in a not-quite-dead state, but when he gets knocked out playing football with Marvin and the other guys, he awakens to find that he forgot to turn the oven on and the turkey is still raw and inedible. Steve takes Louis' drunken advice to heart and tries to make a "big swing" to win Connie back, and when Connie heads out to the store to "rescue" Thanksgiving, Jessica confronts her about her thunder-stealing ways and Connie finally admits that she views Thanksgiving as "hers," as it's the only time during the year that she can impress her family for non-embarrassing reasons. She adds that she and Steve really are having marital troubles, and the sisters decide to buy a deep-fryer to save the day. Back at home, "Huangsgiving" is determined to be a somewhat imperfect success. Includes commercials and promos.
