GOLDBERGS, THE: IN CONCLUSION, THANKSGIVING (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a dysfunctional Pennsylvania family in the 1980s.

In this episode, Beverly schemes to get Murray to invite his estranged father Ben to the family Thanksgiving, wanting to make up for past "food crimes" and prove that she has matured considerably as a chef. Murray's unreliable brother Marvin, now potentially a chiropractor-to-be, arrives for the holiday, and Barry is annoyed when Pops selects Erica to give the official family toast. Adam, desiring money for a new wide-angle camera lens, decides to exploit his dad's emotional connection to Harry Chapin's classic father-son ballad, "Cat's in the Cradle." Meanwhile, Marvin tries to help Barry write an impressive toast to upstage his sister. Beverly joins Adam's campaign and eventually gets Murray to invite Ben to dinner, but Marvin, interpreting the sad tune as a disgruntled son's "revenge song," intervenes and opts not to pick their dad up.

Barry delivers his dramatic and entirely confusing toast, and Marvin hovers outside the house in protest when Ben finally arrives and tries to fend off Beverly's aggressive food offers. Marvin, suggests that Ben, like the dad in "Cat's in the Cradle," doesn't want to spend time with his sons. The family descends into squabbling and Murray throws his back out. Erica offers a speech about the positive aspects of her "garbage family," and everyone settles down to enjoy the holiday after all. Murray is touched to find himself credited as a producer on Adam's oddball music video. Later, Erica attempts to write an emotionally manipulative father-child song of her own, with mixed results. Includes commercials and promos.
