BETTER CALL SAUL: REBECCA (TV)

Summary

One in this drama series, a prequel to "Breaking Bad," about fast-talking New Mexico lawyer Jimmy McGill, later known as Saul Goodman.

In this episode, in a flashback, Chuck prepares dinner with his kind-hearted violinist wife Rebecca, warning her that his younger brother is an "acquired taste." Jimmy soon arrives for the meal and cheerfully describes his first week of work in the mailroom, and Chuck is soon exasperated with his crass attitude and string of lawyer jokes, though Rebecca seems genuinely charmed. In the present, Jimmy is taken aback when second-year associate Erin condescendingly critiques his work, guessing that Howard has assigned her to "babysit" him. He visits Kim, still stuck in doc review at HHM, and urges her to consider suing her own firm for their unfair treatment of her, but she exasperatedly tells him that he cannot "save" her from the situation. Determined to mend her damaged career, Kim spends her lunch breaks calling a wide array of contacts, hoping to score a high-caliber new client.

Mike talks with Stacey, who is safe at a motel with Kaylee, though he declines to visit them, as he is still heavily bruised from his encounter with Tuco. At the courthouse, Jimmy tries to sweet-talk a clerk into giving him a preferential summary judgment hearing, though Erin balks at his not-entirely-ethical methods. He runs into an old friend, Bill, who enviously questions Jimmy about his cushy job at Davis & Main, complaining that his own clients are all "scumbags." After several more hours of hard work, Kim is overjoyed when she finally manages to secure a promising new client, Mesa Verde Bank, though Howard casually states that he will assign another lawyer to the account while she stays in doc review, leaving her quietly devastated. Howard tells Chuck about her accomplishment, though hints that she is not yet "out of the doghouse" for the Sandpiper commercial fiasco.

Chuck arrives at the office at dawn, wanting to avoid the electricity-filled workday, and ends up having coffee with a distressed Kim. When she bluntly asks about her future at the firm, he assures her that she is not the first person to be hurt by Jimmy's antics and reveals the story behind his resentment towards his brother: over the years, Jimmy skimmed $14,000 from their kindly, hard-working father's corner store, though their dad refused to believe the truth and died shortly after being forced to sell the business. Chuck concludes that Jimmy means well but constantly makes thoughtless errors, adding that he will talk to Howard on her behalf. Elsewhere, Mike is joined at breakfast by none other than Hector Salamanca, who apologizes for his hotheaded nephew's behavior and tries to persuade Mike to claim ownership of the gun so that Tuco will receive a lesser jail sentence for the assault. He declares that it is "the best possible outcome for everybody," adding that he will throw in $5,000 for Mike's "trouble," and leaves him to consider the offer. Commercials deleted.
