Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 33rd William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This PALEYFEST 2016 seminar honors “Scream Queens,” a comedic horror series featuring rotating storylines. Rene Reyes (director of programs, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks.
He then brings moderator Debra Birnbaum (executive editor, Variety) to the stage, who introduces the episode “Ghost Stories,” which is screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 125614).
After the screening, Birnbaum moderates the following panelists: executive producer and co-creator Brad Falchuk; and cast members Billie Lourd (Chanel #3), Abigail Breslin (Chanel #5), Keke Palmer (Zayday Williams), Niecy Nash (Denise Hemphill), Lea Michele (Hester Ulrich), Emma Roberts (Chanel Oberlin), and Jamie Lee Curtis (Cathy Munsch).
Topics of discussion include: plans for the upcoming second season of “Scream Queens”; moving production for the show back to Los Angeles; the elaborate steps taken to ensure “secrecy” about the show’s scripts; anticipation among cast members before finding which of them is the show's serial killer; reactions to shooting with popular co-star Glen Powell (Chad Radwell); the process for creating memorable costumes for each episode; the use of humorous improvisation; the cast’s favorite horror movies; and particularly frightening scenes to film.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following questions among others: how the show’s writers come up with an “over-the-top” tone for their scripts; Curtis on filming a scene in homage to the shower scene in the film “Psycho” featuring her mother, Janet Leigh; Michele’s upcoming musical album; how Curtis's experiences filming three "Halloween" movies compares with her current experience in the horror genre; and guest stars the cast hopes to feature on the show.
