12 MONKEYS {TWELVE MONKEYS}: DIVINE MOVE (TV)
Summary
One in this science-fiction television series based on the film of the same name about a man from a post-apocalyptic future who travels back in time to prevent a global pandemic from devastating humanity.
In 2043, while Cole is back in 2015, Ramse breaks into a lockbox and acquires several syringes full of an unknown substance. He then lights Jones’s briefing room on fire before leaving. In 2015, Cole arrives at the bookstore, much to Cassandra and Aaron’s surprise. They realize that his arrival means that their efforts to save humanity failed. Cassandra realizes that Oliver could be the key to preventing the plague from being created. Aaron says they cannot get the CIA to cooperate any further and gets into an argument with Cole, whom he criticizes for being unable to properly accomplish his mission. He leaves, and Cassandra and Cole set out together to find Oliver. She tells him she looked for him in Chechnya, but he does not explain what happened to him. They break into Oliver’s lab, finding the dead body of an unknown man covered in flower petals, the modus operandi of the mysterious agent of the Twelve Monkeys. They snoop around and find out that the dead man is Oliver’s husband, and that Oliver’s hard drive has been stolen. Cole swoons and a recurring incoherent memory flashes through his mind. He conceals his deteriorating physical condition from Cassandra. She finds Oliver’s notebook, containing various notes about the plague.
Inspecting the notebook, they find clippings about the corpse in the “night room’s” vault, labeled the “Annapurna remains.” They also find a photograph of a nightclub in Japan decorated with a white dragon in neon, matching a description given to Cole by Wexler before his death. He realizes that his description of a Yakuza war and Leland’s assertion that he met Cole in 1987 coincide, although from his perspective this event has not yet occurred. Cassandra tries to utilize her CDC contacts to try to determine who is supplying Oliver with his research to recreate strain M510. Just before Cole returns to the future, Cassandra expresses her frustration at the apparent futility of their mission and reveals that she knows about Cole’s declining health, deducing that it is caused by him traveling through time. Immediately after he disappears, a nearby plant changes color, becoming red.
Back in 2043, Cole informs Jones that he must go back in time to November 21st, 1987 to Tokyo in order to prevent Leland from discovering the origin of the virus. She shows him the damage caused by Ramse and he suddenly collapses. Ramse travels to a camp housing the survivors of the Spearhead massacre at an abandoned amusement park and reunites with Elena, explaining that he believes his actions have prevented Jones and Cole from performing any more time travel missions. He produces the syringes he procured, explaining that Cole must be injected with the serum before he travels back in time, and without it he cannot go. He assures Elena that he will prevent any reprisals from Jones or her facility. The camp is approached by “the Daughters,” a group of all-female nomads. They pass by, seemingly not noticing the camp, and Ramse notices the Twelve Monkeys insignia on the side of one of their carts.
Cassandra’s inquiries in 2015 lead her to conclude that Oliver is testing the plague on animals, specifically macaques. In 2043, Jones subjects Cole to a process which she believes will temporarily stabilize the molecules in his bloodstream, staving off deterioration for a while longer. He insists on being sent back to 1987, but Jones refuses for the time being. Cole offers to tell Jones where Ramse went in exchange for her promise that he will not be harmed. Jones instructs Whitley to bring back Ramse alive so as not to alienate Cole. However, she instructs him that if necessary, he should prioritize retrieving the injections over keeping Ramse alive. Ramse is discovered by the Daughters and is held at gunpoint. He asks them about the insignia and is approached by a now-aged Jennifer, who appears to be their leader. In 2015 Aaron expresses his concerns about Cassandra cooperating with Cole, believing that doing so will inevitably lead to the same terrible fate that she suffers in the future. She believes the stakes are too great for her to stop and asks him to assist her. In 2043 Ramse tries to ask questions of Jennifer, although she speaks in jumbled, incoherent phrases. She mentions Cole and states that he cannot stop the plague; she says the only person who knows the true origin of the plague is the Witness. She gives him the necklace she took from the mysterious Twelve Monkeys agent, claiming that he will need it and that he “will be” a good friend. Meanwhile, Whitley and his men search the Spearhead camp for the injections. A disturbance occurs and Elena is accidentally shot. Whitley immediately executes the shooter to avoid a full-scale conflict. Ramse returns to the camp and finds Samuel attending to Elena’s body. He swears to always protect Samuel and promises to come back for him.
Whitley reports back to Jones, who is furious that he allowed Elena to die and returned empty-handed. He is shaken by the experience and cannot bring himself to kill Ramse, reasoning that Samuel needs a father. In 2015, Cassandra and Aaron track a shipment of macaques for use in Olvier’s viral research. In searching a field of shipping containers for the macaques, Cassandra instead finds Oliver locked up in one of them. She opens the door and finds a fully-stocked laboratory inside with Oliver slumped on the floor. He says the virus has been completed, and that Markridge blackmailed him into compliance by threatening his husband. He mentions that the virus is part of a plan by “the Twelve,” and once he realizes that his husband is dead begs Cassandra to kill him; he reasons that he could be forced to recreate the virus again and wishes to prevent this however he can. She considers granting his request and killing him, but decides not to, advising him to go on the run and remain hidden. Meanwhile, Aaron encounters the mysterious woman who accompanied the Witness. She offers to help him keep Cassandra alive.
In 2043, Ramse returns to the facility, bringing the case of injections with him. Whitley orders him to deposit the injections and leave, but Ramse demands to speak to Jones, hoping to secure her assurances that Samuel will not be harmed. Whitley apologizes for what happened to Elena, and Ramse attacks him and his security officers, killing two but sparing Whitley’s life. Ramse sets off an alarm and Jones cuts her experiment on Cole short so they can immediately send him back to 1987. Ramse infiltrates the time travel chamber just as Jones and the others are preparing the machine for activation. He kills several scientists and holds Jones at gunpoint as he attaches plastic explosives to the time machine. Max tries to confront Ramse and talk him out of his plan, but he refuses. Jones tries to put his desire to protect his son into perspective, but he concludes that her only reason for trying to undo the plague is to save Hannah’s life. Jones dares him to fire, and while he is distracted Max grabs a gun and tries to talk him down. He shoots Max and they get into a firefight as Jones tries to dispose of the plastic explosives. Ramse is sealed in the time travel chamber alone and Jones again tells him to give up.
Ramse injects himself with one of the syringes and attempts to send himself back in time. Cole, against orders, gets up and reports to the scene, finding Max just as she bleeds out and dies. Ramse has one of the scientists activate the machine, thus sending him back in time. Jones informs Cole that Ramse was set to go back to 1987, but that the impromptu serum injection may have altered his course somewhat. She warns Cole that their treatment can only ensure one more jump back in time for him before his condition becomes potentially fatal. Ramse arrives in Tokyo in 1987 and stumbles about the street, highly disoriented. Commercials deleted.
