12 MONKEYS {TWELVE MONKEYS}: SHONIN (TV)

Summary

One in this science-fiction television series based on the film of the same name about a man from a post-apocalyptic future who travels back in time to prevent a global pandemic from devastating humanity.

Cole arrives in Tokyo in 1987 and pursues the fleeing Ramse. Meanwhile, a younger Leland meets in a nightclub with Nakano, a Yakuza boss, who shows him the Annapurna remains, which are stated to be over one thousand years old. Leland considers purchasing the remains in order to further a human cloning project he is overseeing, although he does not view the specimen as valuable enough to acquire. Cole seizes Leland and demands to know about the virus and the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, but Leland does not know anything and mistakes Cole for a hitman sent after him by Nakano. He realizes that Leland has not yet acquired the corpse and inadvertently informs Leland of the existence of the virus. Before he can make any more progress, Ramse ambushes Cole and fights him out on the nightclub’s dance floor. Nakano and his men separate them and force them to have a knife-fight. Ramse stabs Cole and he collapses to the floor, dying. Leland decides to go through with his deal and leaves Cole and Ramse for Nakano to deal with.

Ramse is taken to Fuchu Prison, where he refuses to cooperate with a lawyer sent to represent him; he faces a lengthy prison sentence for stabbing Cole. He remains in prison, and the following year he receives a letter written by the mysterious woman in the Twelve Monkeys, who identifies herself as “Olivia.” She expresses a desire to help him save Samuel and calls him “important.” Over the next few years, Olivia sends Ramse books, a journal, and pencils in order to help him pass the time. One prisoner frequently beats and abuses Ramse, but Ramse gets his revenge in 1992 when he accuses the prisoner of being a snitch in front of the other prisoners, impelling them to attack him. Eight years into his sentence, a guard brings him clothes and a passport which he claims belongs to him, as well as the necklace Jennifer gave to him in 2043. Olivia sends him a letter explaining that it is time for him to join her and her associates. He is taken to a mansion in Virginia, where Olivia comes out to meet him. He is introduced to the mysterious man, and Olivia collects both his necklace and the time-displaced version from 2043. The amulets are placed together, causing an explosion of energy which coalesces and causes all plants in a courtyard to change color from green to red.

Sixteen years later, in 2011, Ramse advocates that Olivia invest in Markridge; he suffers from an unknown ailment which discolors his veins. Olivia introduces Ramse, operating under an assumed name, to Leland. They set up a meeting, and Leland is briefly called away by Jennifer, who constantly mutters that “everything’s changing, green to red.” In 2013, the incident at the “night room” with Jennifer occurs, and in 2014 Ramse is informed of Dr. Toussaint’s death in Haiti. Olivia indicates that the river fever outbreak there was deliberately engineered by the Twelve Monkeys. He is also informed of Cole’s presence in the past and he waits to confront him until the year 2015. In 2014, at the J.D. Peoples Mental Hospital, Leland pays Jennifer a visit. She asks to be permitted to leave, but Leland refuses under the pretense that he believes that she is responsible for killing the scientists at the “night room.” In private, Leland orders his samples of M510 to be moved and considers taking up the CIA on their deal to create a virus for them.

In 2015, Ramse is informed of Leland’s death and he orders Jennifer’s seizure from the mental hospital. When Cole and Cassandra destroy the remains in the “night room,” the mysterious man complains and Olivia intones that “the period of interference must be maintained” to ensure that history proceeds as it was meant to, thus ensuring that Ramse will be sent back in time. To that end they have Oliver recreate the virus, after which he is discovered by Cassandra and Olivia confronts Aaron. Ramse gives Olivia specific orders not to kill Cassandra, as the message she leaves during the plague is essential to maintaining history. He also believes that Cole died in 1987 and orders Olivia to release the plague. Senator Royce announces that he will run a presidential campaign in 2016, and Cassandra speaks to an inebriated Aaron about this. He tells her that Royce’s burgeoning campaign found him “unsuitable” to work for them due to his interference with Operation Troy. He believes the plague is inevitable and offers to take Cassandra to an isolated shelter to “ride it out,” but Cassandra maintains hope that they can still find a way to stop it. They get into an argument about what course of action they should take. Ultimately Aaron follows Cassandra’s advice and speaks to Royce about a project of his in the private sector to establish far-reaching emergency shelter protocols in the case of a widespread disaster. Royce meets with the project’s primary investor, who turns out to be Olivia, sending Aaron into a panic when he recognizes her.

Jennifer is brought to the mansion in Virginia and locked up. Olivia introduces herself to Jennifer and tells her that they have security footage proving that she didn’t kill the Markridge scientists. She also mentions Jennifer’s mother, who she says was taken away long ago for apparently exhibiting similar mental instability and eventually died. Jennifer becomes emotional and is receptive to Olivia’s sympathy. In 2043, Jones’s equipment indicates that Cole is dying from his injuries in 1987 and she orders an emergency activation to send him to 2015. He disappears from 1987 before he can be executed by one of Nakano’s men. However, they lose track of his signal and Whitley believes that Cole did not survive, thus putting an end to their mission to change history. He points out that they have lost too many men in recent events and that they can no longer secure the facility, but Jones insists that they still have a chance. Whitley expresses disillusionment with Jones’s plan and angrily leaves the facility, taking the remainder of his men with him. In 2015, Cassandra finds Cole in the bookstore, still bleeding profusely from his stab wound. He claims that he has figured out that the Witness is actually Ramse. Commercials deleted.
