12 MONKEYS {TWELVE MONKEYS}: PARADOX (TV)

Summary

One in this science-fiction television series based on the film of the same name about a man from a post-apocalyptic future who travels back in time to prevent a global pandemic from devastating humanity.

Jones believes that Cole survived being sent to 2015, but does not believe that he will return. In Manhattan in 2015, a younger Jones arrives from Germany to work on a quantum physics project; the project aims to halt the passage of time in human cells. Her father attempts to get her to come back to Berlin with him, but she refuses. On her way home, Jones is approached by Cassandra, who tells her that Cole is dying. Jones does not recognize his name and tries to leave, but Cassandra holds her at gunpoint. Back at the bookstore, Cole lays dying and Aaron approaches him. Cassandra shows Jones her own notes from the future, much to her amazement. Suddenly Cole has a seizure and Aaron is unsure of how to help him. He calls Cassandra for help, and while instructing him Jones manages to get away. Aaron injects Cole with epinephrine and he suddenly starts breathing again. Jones returns with a knife, recognizing that Cassandra was threatening her with a fake gun. Cassandra begs her to help save Cole, and Jones reconsiders.

Cassandra returns to the bookstore and explains that she encountered Jones at the address given to Cole by the future version of Cassandra from 2017. Jones enters as well, much to Cole’s surprise, as he realizes that she “always knew” him. Despite her attempts to help him, Cole has resigned himself to his death, believing that everything transpiring was already fated to happen. In 2043, Jones restarts her team’s investigation into the past in spite of the evidence destroyed by Whitley. They gather all the information they have on Markridge and their economic and political activities. In 2015, Jennifer usurps the position of Markridge’s CEO by revealing incriminating evidence concerning his infidelity and illegal offshore accounts; she becomes the new CEO by virtue of her status as majority shareholder in the company. Jones concludes that the deterioration of Cole’s cells is irreversible and he is going to die. Cassandra tells her about how she first met Cole, and this inspires Jones to devise a solution: she believes that if they can find the current incarnation of Cole (who is about six years old as of 2015) and introduce his un-deteriorated DNA into the Cole from 2043, they could undo the damage done to his cells.

Aaron leaves and meets with Olivia in order to broker a deal to save Cassandra’s life. Olivia does not give him many details and he feels uncomfortable with some aspects of his decision. Cassandra finds Cole’s name in a social security database and goes with Jones to find a man who may be Cole’s father, Matthew Cole. She is prepared to kidnap the young Cole if necessary. Suddenly Jones throws up, and Cassandra realizes that she is pregnant. Jones states that her husband left her after only six days of marriage, and that she intends to get an abortion. In 2043, Jones looks through her chest of Hannah’s things, finding a business card for a garage inside. In 2015, Cassandra and Jones pull in to the garage and ask to see Matthew under the pretense of investigating an E. Coli outbreak for the CDC. The man working at the garage claims that Matthew no longer lives there and that he disappeared months ago. However, Jones and Cassandra find a young boy playing on a swing set in the back, and he turns out to be Cole. Matthew tells them that he gave them a false name due to his paranoia and desire to protect his son. Cassandra tries to tell Matthew the truth, but Matthew does not believe them and threatens them with a gun. She mentions the Army of the Twelve Monkeys and Matthew reveals that he heard the phrase before from Marion, Cole’s mother. She asks Matthew to come with her and see the adult Cole for himself.

Matthew accedes to her request and meets Cole, whose condition continues to worsen. In 2043, Jones discovers several red-colored vines tangled up in the time machine’s inner workings. She demands that it be examined. In 2015, Matthew consents to have the young Cole give blood to the adult Cole. The adult Cole approaches his younger self but suddenly both of them experience sharp headaches; Jones cautions him to keep his distance. Cole asks Matthew about his mother, and he says their time together was rather brief and that although they were in love she turned down his proposal not long before leaving. She then dropped Cole off with him, claiming that she could not protect him. He is grateful that he was entrusted with the care of his son, believing that it has made him a better person. Aaron has Cassandra meet him around the corner from the bookstore and tries to kidnap her, but she resists and runs off. The mysterious man in the employ of the Twelve Monkeys arrives and Cassandra runs into the bookstore to warn the others. Cassandra and Jones escape with the child Cole as Matthew tries to hold off the mysterious man. The child Cole looks on as his father is gunned down, accounting for the adult Cole’s recurring memory of the incident.

The mysterious man heads back into the bookstore to kill Cole, but before he can do so Cole injects himself with the blood taken from his younger self, causing him to glow and levitate off the ground. He sends out a wave of destructive energy which destroys the bookstore and knocks the mysterious man off his feet. Cassandra returns to find the remains of the bookstore empty except for Cole, nude and unconscious but apparently unharmed. He awakens and Cassandra tells him about what happened, and that Aaron betrayed them. Jones and Cassandra drop the younger Cole off at a foster home, and Jones decides not to have an abortion. Jones decides to do her best to prevent the spread of the plague but refuses Cole’s attempt to give her more information, believing that it could inadvertently undermine her efforts. She states that the paradox induced by his blood injection makes him unable to return to his own time. Cole and Cassandra looks on as the child Cole meets Ramse, at this point another child in the foster home, for the first time. In 2043, Jones and her people conclude that the red ivy is native to a different time period, adapted to an atmosphere with elevated levels of greenhouse gases. Before they can investigate further, Whitley reappears carrying the severed head of one of his men, warning them that someone is coming for them. The bodies of Whitley’s men are arranged by a group of strange-looking pale men in black uniforms who are collaborating with Deacon to infiltrate the facility. Commercials deleted.
