PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: MAKING SENSE OF THE 2016 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of seminars presented by the Paley Center for Media in New York. This seminar analyzes the events of the 2016 United States presidential primary election, as well as emergent political and social trends thereof. Ron Simon (curator, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks.

John Dickerson (host, “Face the Nation”) moderates the following panelists: senior political writer for Buzzfeed News McKay Coppins; POLITICO national political reporter Katie Glueck; and Upworthy co-founder Eli Pariser.

Topics of discussion include: the roles of both “traditional” media and social media in the development of the election, particularly with regards to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump; the angry reactions of numerous disenfranchised voters and the apparent disconnect between political media analysts and the general public; Republican political sensibilities in the past decade and how they shaped Trump’s and Republican candidate Ted Cruz’s campaigns; how the campaign of Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders demonstrates changing priorities amongst voters, especially in comparison to candidate Hillary Clinton; the notion of Trump as “ahistorical” in reference to the values of the Republican party; the relationship between Trump and the news media, both positive and negative; issues surrounding the presidential primaries and caucuses, and the question of whether the system is “broken”; comparisons between the Democrat and Republican candidate debates, particularly with regards to policy debate content; the ethnic issues underlying the ethnic and economic issues plaguing the general public; Trump’s use of social media and factually incorrect, often provocative statements in attracting the interest of his potential voters; and the issues likely to remain important during the upcoming general election.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: the chances for a contested Republican National Convention; the likely behavior of Sanders’s supporters; Trump’s contentious relationship with other Republican Party leaders; the role of the media in effecting political change; media organizations blacklisted by the Trump campaign; considerations by the political candidates relating to their vice-presidential selection; and whether Clinton is considering selecting Elizabeth Warren as her running mate.

Also includes a number of clips about the election, including a news story about one of Clinton’s campaign advertisements, an interview between George Stephanopoulos and Trump, various clips about Sanders’s campaign, footage of Trump at a Republican candidate debate and ensuing news stories about the interaction between him and moderator Megyn Kelly, footage from debates between Democrats Sanders and Clinton and Republicans Trump, Bush, Marco Rubio, and Cruz, a clip from Clinton’s appearance on an episode of “Saturday Night Live,” a clip of Conan O’Brien making fun of Trump, a clip from a press conference featuring Trump with Sarah Palin, clips from various press conferences run by the candidates, a clip of commentary on the caucuses by John Oliver on “Last Week Tonight,” and a clip from a press conference of Barack Obama commenting on the presidential election.
