JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE! (ROBERT DOWNEY JR., DON CHEADLE, EMILY VANCAMP, PAUL BETTANY, MAYER HAWTHORNE) (TV)
Summary
One in this series of live late-night talk shows hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. This episode's guests include "Captain America: Civil War" stars Robert Downey, Jr., Don Cheadle, Paul Bettany, and Emily VanCamp, and musical guest Mayer Hawthorne.
In his opening monologue, Kimmel touches on the following topics, among others: the recent retirement of Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant, and the expensive game tickets and products associated with him; a recent rally at which Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump revealed his ignorance about NATO; a rare public appearance by his daughter Tiffany; an argument on the Parliament floor involving Prime Minister David "Dodgy Dave" Cameron; and musician Bono's unusual ideas for world peace.
Kimmel then introduces a segment in which random people on the street are challenged to name the members of the Avengers, the Marvel Comics superhero group highlighted in "Civil War," among other films, as well as many United States presidents as possible, with dispiriting results. Kimmel's "cousin" Sal then performs one of his hidden-camera pranks in which he portrays a Costco clerk whose writing of a letter to his estranged girlfriend takes precedence over helping customers; the annoyed patrons ultimately offer advice on composing the letter.
The first guest, Downey Jr., joins Kimmel and comments on the following topics: flashback scenes in "Civil War" featuring a much-younger Tony Stark; attending the previous night's Hollywood premiere alongside "nervous nelly" Chris Evans, who plays Steve Rogers/Captain America, and brought New England Patriots members to the screening; rumors that Downey cajoled Evans into taking the high-profile role; his feelings on Tom Holland, the young "foreign" actor who has taken over the iconic role of Peter Parker/Spider-man; Marisa Tomei's role as Peter's Aunt May, usually portrayed as an elderly woman; his daughter Avri's love of the Iron Man character; and his enjoyment of watching Kimmel's show.
After a clip from "Civil War," Downey is joined by Cheadle, Bettany, and VanCamp, and the conversation continues onto the following topics: how VanCamp's character Sharon Carter "plays both sides" of the central conflict in the film; their experience seeing the film for the first time at the premiere; Bettany's role as superhero Vision, after portraying the voice-only role of JARVIS, Tony Stark's computer butler; their elaborate costumes and makeup, include VanCamp's relief in playing a non-superhero human with regular attire; working with brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, who co-directed the film; how well the actors know one another, as demonstrated via a trivia quiz; whether they received the entire top-secret script or only their own scenes; Downey's possession of the Stark Tower "A" prop; their roles as "mentors" to the younger actors; and a "shocking" story from the set of "Back to School" (1986), starring Downey and Rodney Dangerfield.
Finally, Hawthorne performs "Love Like That" from his album "Man About Town." Includes commercials and promos.
