PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST FALL TV PREVIEWS 2016: EL REY: LUCHA UNDERGROUND {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 2016 Fall Preview PALEYFEST events in Los Angeles. This evening celebrates "Lucha Underground," the action/drama series that sets lucha libre wrestling matches within a story about a competition to become the world's best fighter in a gathering place known as The Temple.
Rene Reyes (director of programs, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks before introducing Daniel Tibbets, president and general manager of the El Rey Network. Tibbets' talk about the show is quickly "interrupted" by Luis Ferandez-Gil (Dario Cueto, "Lucha Underground") who insists on making his own comments before introducing the episode “The Amulet,” screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 127260).
After the screening, Reyes brings Melissa Santos (Ring Announcer, "Lucha Underground") to the stage, who introduces moderator Dale Rutledge ("The Wrestling Campadres" show), as well as the following panelists: executive producers Eric Van Wagenen, Dorian Roldan, and Skip Chaison; co-executive producer and writer Chris DeJoseph; producer Ian "Vampiro" Hodgkinson (Announcer), and cast members Karlee Perez (Catrina), Kira Foster (Taya), Martin Rubalcaba (Marty Elias), and Fenix (Himself).
The panelists touch on such topics as: the origin of the series as an American version of "Lucha libre"; the challenge of breaking into the American TV market; whether the on-camera wrestlers were the producers' first choices; what makes the show different from any other wrestling-based programs; reaction to Perez's "lick of death"; the athletic challenges for women in the world of wrestling; Foster's labored journey into the role of a wrestler; women's reaction to operating in the "macho" wrestling milieu; how "Lucha Underground" has changed the industry; the creative process involved in lensing the show's vignettes; the wrestlers' agreeing to go out of their "comfort zones" to film "soul-baring" exchanges; how the show has made Fenix's ultimate dream come true; the most jaw-dropping moments on the series; and "the shocking ending" planned to conclude season three.
