QUANTICO: KUBARK (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic suspense series about government operative Alex Parrish and her fight against terrorism. In this episode, the G20 hostages talk amongst themselves as Raina refuses to assist the terrorists, covertly observed by Alex. Elsewhere, Shelby updates the other agents on the rogue AIC group, and Raina appears on TV stating that the terrorists have offered to release all 1,667 hostages in exchange for Eric Boyer, the hacker pardoned by the president. One year ago, the team discusses the bug found in Alex's room, wondering if it was Owen's way of "vetting" his new recruits, and Miranda orders them to "lay low" as she and Keyes investigate the matter. Harry grows increasingly suspicious of Sebastian's long phone calls, and Dayana is distressed to hear that one of her witnesses has recanted, throwing her entire case into jeopardy. Ryan receives a package containing a P.O. box key, apparently left to him in Liam's will, and Alex is upset to find that she is in last place on the "murder board" rankings. Owen tells the team that they will be wearing wrist devices that will monitor their stress levels, warning them all to master their emotions and "stay green," lest they risk dismissal from the program.

In the present, a disguised Alex finds Raina and warns her that the exchange must not happen, as the terrorists clearly want Boyer for some nefarious purpose. She tells Raina to include herself in the trade and get a message to Miranda about the hidden threat via coded language, while elsewhere Miranda urges Burke and Shelby to accept the bargain, wondering how they will convince Boyer to hand himself over. Harry is unnerved when he is ordered to undergo a blood test at the CIA infirmary, and Léon learns that a dangerous criminal whom he himself imprisoned has recently escaped in Mexico. Owen announces that the trainees are headed to an event at Langley and will be closely monitored during the potentially stressful evening, and Alex gets an idea for beating the system. A year later, Miranda captures Boyer and informs him that she is an AIC "representative" reminding him that he did not keep up his end of the bargain. Trapped, Boyer agrees to hand himself over, but gives Shelby a pointed tip about the private e-mails. Raina updates Lydia about Alex's plan, though Lydia seems skeptical. At the Langley event, Alex attempts to clone Owen's phone and find the potential AIC mole by monitoring their reactions to Ryan's questions. Léon is told that the convict actually made a deal to "escape" prison, and Harry compiles a list of his lovers, wondering if he has made a serious error. Alex tries to chat up Owen to allow the phone process to complete, though he coldly notes that her "skill" with teachers will not fool him.

The terrorists gradually release hostages as Boyer inches closer, though Miranda appears not to understand Raina's message and Alex causes a distraction by firing her weapon into the air. At Langley, Owen bitterly notes that being "burned" by a journalist has taught him a lesson about trust, and when Alex continues to pursue him, he warns her about knowing her own strengths and weaknesses. A distracted Ryan heads for the post office and finds only a CIA hat, and Owen tells the trainees that they have all been manipulated by strategic lies and urges them to "identify and accept" their own weaknesses. Dayana and Léon bond over the tricks played upon them, namely her witness' "recant" and his prisoner's "escape," and Harry figures out that Sebastian attempted suicide in the past, possibly because of inner turmoil over his sexuality. Owen assures Alex that she is indeed "special" and will make an excellent CIA agent with further hard work, while in the present Shelby is frustrated when Burke and Miranda seem satisfied with the hostages' far-too-simple release, wondering if some of the terrorists are hidden amongst them. Ryan sadly tells Alex that he must distance himself from her, as she is his true "weakness," and Lydia, guessing that Owen suspects that he was burned on purpose by someone within the agency, offers to help him uncover the truth. Alex examines Owen's data and finds that Leigh's stress level spiked when Ryan asked her about "bugs," and Shelby is stunned to find a secret e-mail from Boyer telling her that Miranda is "one of them." Boyer, trapped with the terrorists, kills himself to avoid doing their bidding, and Raina, still confused about Miranda's non-response to her hint, tells Lydia that Alex is still in grave danger back at the exchange site.
