SPEECHLESS: M-A-MAY-JAY (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about the quirky DiMeo family, including special-needs son J.J. In this episode, J.J. informs his mother that he wishes to be more independent, though Maya is thrilled to hear that, as the school will not pay for his services over the summer, Kenneth will soon be leaving the family for a short time, allowing mother and son to reunite as "May-Jay." Finding that Ray is going to desperate lengths to pass gym, Dylan offers to teach her awkward brother to be more athletic. J.J. confides to Kenneth that he wishes to go away to camp rather than spending the summer with his mother, and Kenneth advises him to "use her vanity against her" in order to convince her of his plan. Jimmy is forced to hang out with fellow school dad Dane and is amazed to find that he has "juice" at an upscale restaurant and can easily secure all kinds of tantalizing extras, while elsewhere Dylan is upset to find that Ray is actually an excellent runner and has therefore stolen "her thing."

J.J. appeals to Maya's emotions with a maternal scrapbook and then springs the camp surprise, but Maya tells him that he is not ready for the adventure, though Kenneth defends J.J.'s right to "spread his wings." Dylan decides to become hyper-smart in order to steal Ray's "thing," and J.J., still determined to prove his independence, ends up falling out of his wheelchair and dislocating his kneecap. Jimmy is surprised to find that he too has "juice" – at the hospital, and Kenneth overreacts to J.J.'s mishap and frets over his young friend's wellbeing. Frustrated by the setback, J.J. concludes that he is not ready for a whole summer of camp after all, but Maya changes her tune and decides that he must go in order to gain confidence. Ray and Dylan compete to be the first to greet J.J. post-surgery, knowing that he will be particularly affectionate thanks to the anesthesia, and Kenneth and Maya take turns convincing J.J. to follow his heart and give camp a try. Later, Jimmy proudly brings Dane into the hospital for an unusual meal. Commercials deleted.
