PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST FALL PREVIEWS 2017: NETFLIX: BIG MOUTH {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 2017 Fall Preview PALEYFEST events in Los Angeles. This evening celebrates "Big Mouth," the animated comedy series about the adolescent growing pains of two best friends, based on the lives of comedian Nick Kroll and writer Andrew Goldberg. Host Rene Reyes (executive in charge of production, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks and introduces the premiere episode, "Ejaculation," which is then screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 130584.)

After the screening, Ben Travers (television critic, Indiewire) moderates the following panelists: executive producers/creators/writers Mark Levin, Jennifer Flackett and Andrew Goldberg; and cast members Jason Mantzoukas (Jay Bilzerian / Jay's dad), Jenny Slate (Missy) and Jessi Klein (Jessi Glaser). Executive producer/creator/writer/cast member Nick Kroll (Nick Birch / The Hormone Monster / Coach Steve) joins the panel via Skype from the set of his upcoming film "Uncle Drew" (2018).

The panelists touch on such topics as: Kroll and Goldberg's longtime friendship and series of shared uncomfortable teen experiences; the character of Jay as a combination of several of their childhood friends; the "extremely open" writers' room, for which applicants were given a "litmus test" of relating their own embarrassing adolescent stories; their interest in including stories about both male and female puberty; the writers' interest in the actors' points of view, including Slate's views on the "formative" nature of one's teen years; the "therapeutic" experience of talking through their painful memories in creating the "raunchy but sweet" series; the highly emotional aspects of the puberty years and their hopes that the show will be "cathartic" to younger viewers; testing Netflix's content boundaries with explicit material; their two-minute animated pitch for the series, featuring photos of young Kroll and Goldberg; Slate's sense of her Missy's similarities to "Niece Denise," her awkward "Kroll Show" character; Mantzoukas' enjoyment of working alongside and improvising with friends; why Klein's first voiceover role is "a dream"; why the writers want the actors to record together "as often as possible"; the "incredibly warm environment" of their shared sessions; using Klein's thirteen-year-old son as a "test subject" for the material; the creation of the "Hormone Monster" and the more complex and nuanced "Hormone Monstress," voiced by Maya Rudolph; and surprising inspiration from songstress Diana Ross.
