9JKL: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first in this comedy series about a fading Hollywood star who is forced to live alongside his overbearing family in a New York City apartment building. In this episode, fresh from a divorce and the cancellation of his subpar police drama, "Blind Cop," Josh Roberts is annoyed when his neighbors – namely his parents Harry and Judy, as well as brother Andrew and sister-in-law Eve – barge into his apartment first thing in the morning with little respect for his space. Oversharing doorman Nick introduces Josh to know-it-all kid Ian, who is unimpressed to hear that Josh is living "with" his parents again, and Harry soon guilts his son into starring in a "viral" video for his law firm. While in the park with Andrew, Josh runs into Christina, a college friend who is also newly single, and sparks fly between the two of them.
Josh tries in vain to return home without his mother's notice, and he soon finds that his first date with Christina falls on the same evening that he has promised to help his father with the video. He rushes through the poorly written skit and rushes off to meet her, but Andrew and Eve's babysitter then calls with a crisis and Josh is forced to bring his infant nephew Wyatt along to the restaurant, much to Christina's confusion. He hurriedly shoos Andrew and Eve away when they come to retrieve the baby, and the rest of the evening goes more smoothly, with Christina suggesting that they return to "his place." At the apartment building, Josh is annoyed to learn that Judy has been paying Nick to alert her to his arrivals, and Josh ushers Christina into his place, explaining that he must briefly visit with an "elderly neighbor" first. Despite his frantic efforts to keep his date and nosy "neighbors" apart, Christina eventually catches on, thanks to their shared balconies, and she departs, unnerved by his family's lack of boundaries.
Josh's frustration with his family disappears when he learns that Harry's meddling has secured him a sit-down with "Bridesmaids" director Paul Feig, and the entire Roberts clan rushes downtown to make the meeting. Feig quickly assures Josh that he is not all right for the lead part in his new film, but offers him the smaller part of "the klutzy bandleader," which he happily accepts. Later, he bribes Nick to stop telling Judy of his movements – but he finds that his family is already in his apartment, dismissive of his pleas for "ground rules." Commercials deleted.
