SCANDAL: ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING (TV)

Summary

One in this drama/political thriller about the Pope & Associates crisis management firm in Washington D.C. In this episode, Olivia coldly orders a captive Rowan to send Fitz out of the way and back home to Vermont, and Mellie prepares to send troops to Bashran to reinstate ousted President Rashad, though polls reveal that American are strongly against the proposed war. Rashad's niece, Dartmouth student Yasmeen, is sent to QPA for protection, and Olivia suggests to Jake that the war might be avoided altogether if one coup leader is killed and the other blamed for it. Fitz retaliates against Olivia by telling Mellie "everything," including the truth behind Luna Vargas' death, and a furious Mellie orders Olivia to shut down her secret machinations and get congressional approval for the war in an above-board fashion. Olivia lambasts Rowan for not taking a firmer hand with Fitz, and as Quinn and Charlie attempt to assemble a hasty wedding, they find that Yasmeen has somehow escaped their offices.

Fitz sits down with Jake, who informs him that he's "wasting his time" trying to stand in Olivia's way, and Olivia persuades Curtis, still her casual lover, to "do the right thing" and make Rashad look good on TV to boost approval of the war. As Cyrus tries to persuade a number of senators to vote for Mellie's plan, plainspoken businessman Fenton Glackland explains that, according to his algorithm, the war is a "crappy product" that will seriously hurt Cyrus' reputation with the American people. Huck finds Yasmeen at a rest stop with her girlfriend Gillian, and the two girls plead to be allowed to simply leave town and hide from danger, but Quinn, angry at Charlie's momentary lapse in judgement, sends Gillian back to school and places Yasmeen back on lockdown. Cyrus informs Olivia that he will vote against the war regardless of her potential threats against him, and when Olivia accuses Fitz of causing serious harm with his meddling, he retorts that she's "misplaced her white hat" and her morals in her quest for power.

With the war likely not happening, Rashad tells a desperate Mellie of his willingness to risk his life by returning to Bashran to serve his people, and the two share a passionate kiss. Cyrus and Glackland also find themselves in a romantic moment when Cyrus concedes that he "might be good in politics" after all, and when Olivia, inspired by Quinn, frankly asks Mellie what she wants, Mellie gives in and allows Olivia to go ahead with her underhanded plan for ending the coup, deciding that she would prefer not to know the details. Mellie soon tells Rashad that he is returning to Bashran victorious, as the coup has been stopped, and he happily promises to return to her soon. Yasmeen is crushed at the prospect of returning with him and leaving behind the benefits of her American life, but Quinn gently urges her to "believe in love" and take the opportunity to make positive changes in her home country. Olivia then arranges for Mellie to oust Fitz once and for all, ordering him to address her only through mediators, and though Olivia thanks Curtis for his help with Rashad, he deems her "inhuman" and ends their tryst. Quinn and Charlie make up as they bid farewell to Yasmeen — but they are then horrified when the plan explodes, killing Rashad and Yasmeen. Includes commercials and promos.
