PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST 2018: SUPERNATURAL {PUBLIC SHORT VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 35th William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This PALEYFEST 2018 seminar honors "Supernatural," the drama series about the adventures of two Kansas brothers who travel the country hunting deadly urban legends and evil spirits.
Samantha Highfill (journalist, Entertainment Weekly) moderates the following panelists: executive producer/director/writer Robert Singer; executive producers/writers Andrew Dabb, Eugenie Ross-Leming and Brad Buckner; and cast members Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester), Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester), Misha Collins (Castiel), and Alexander Calvert (Jack).
The panelists touch on such topics as: their enjoyment of "Scoobynatural," the "Scooby-Doo"-themed episode, and recording the voiceovers for the animated sequences; the origins of the episode's idea and how the animation team made it "better and gorier"; deleted scenes and possible DVD extras; exploring parallel realities, including the one used in the spin-off series "Wayward Sisters" and an apocalyptic world in which the Winchesters do not exist; creating doppelganger versions of familiar characters who have had different experiences; the episode "The Big Empty," in which Collins played two different versions of Castiel; the "intense" day of shooting scenes with "himself"; Calvert's lively first season on the show, including extensive nude scenes and "light hazing" from Ackles and Padalecki; a funny story about director Nina Lopez-Corrado's impatience with the actors' antics; praise for Calvert's depiction of Jack's moral struggle, being half human and half demon; why Padalecki and Ackles have not become producers on the show after thirteen seasons; Padalecki's sense that Sam "focuses on the failures" despite his many heroic actions; Ackles' views on Dean's turmoil and how he will "step up in a big way"; how the characters' personal ups and downs mirror their real lives; the brothers' characteristic "pep talks"; Singer's praise for Ackles' and Padalecki's thoughtful input into their characters and why the "best idea wins" on set; memorable challenging episodes, including tongue-twisting dialogue and on-camera teasing from co-stars; and their interest in filming at the appropriately named Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California and at the Stanley Hotel in Estes, Colorado, among other spooky spots.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics, among others: Padalecki and Ackles' efforts to stay true to their characters throughout their unusual adventures and settings; their surprise at the show's longevity and reasons for staying with the series, including Ackles' story of his surprise birthday party with the extended cast and crew; Ackles' and Padalecki's genuine fraternal bond on and off the screen, and memories of series creator Eric Kripke's wise words about how the show "lives and dies" with their chemistry; and how Collins juggles his portrayals of the many different versions of Castiel, including "Crazy Cas" and human vessel Jimmy Novak.
