MODERN FAMILY: CLASH OF SWORDS {NINTH SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The ninth season finale in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, Manny hits the road for a solo bed-and-breakfast tour as Mitch and Cam attempt to wrangle their near-feral nephew Calhoun, whose mother Pam has landed back in jail, before sending him off to Cam's parents. Mitch tries to overcome his self-consciousness as he heads to fantasy-themed convention "HeroCon" with an excited Phil, and Jay is outraged when a high-tech smart closet company attempts to buy him out, having already poached a few of their employees. Gloria throws a dinosaur-themed birthday party for Joe and finds that she has been dramatically outdone by rival mom Dr. Donna Duncan, and Manny, apprehensive of traveling alone, tries to recruit Haley, and then Alex, to accompany him.
Jay and Claire visit the rival company to "save" their former employee Margaret, and while Claire is impressed with their work and suggests a mutually beneficial merger, Jay quickly refuses. Cam arrives at Joe's not-so-fun birthday and realizes Donna stole the party idea through him, and though Mitch makes friends at the convention, Phil unintentionally causes trouble when he commits the mortal sin of revealing spoilers about the attendees' favorite show, "Clash of Swords." Jay sadly agrees to the merger, and Claire assures him that his young competitors are still "just nerds," and Mitch defends Phil from the angry mob, reminding them that they are all "misfits and weirdos." Cam's attempts to spice up Joe's party go disastrously wrong and Gloria, defeated, sends the kids to Donna's cooler party, though Mitch and Cam reassure her that she is a caring mother, as evidenced by her success with "weird kid" Manny. Agreeing that parents shouldn't "break" their kids and deciding to face their respective fears, Mitch and Cam decide to care for Cal themselves, and Mitch confesses the truth about HeroCon as Claire announces their plans for the merger. Later, however, Jay is again defeated by an automatic sink. Includes commercials and promos.
