Summary
One in this series of live late-night talk shows hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. This episode's guests include actors Cate Blanchett and Ben Mendelsohn, and musical guest The Chainsmokers.
In his opening monologue, Kimmel touches on the following topics, among others: the approach of Hurricane Florence and some beachgoers' laissez-faire attitudes about the potential danger; Donald Trump's nonsensical lies about the death toll in Puerto Rico from Hurricane Maria, which is actually close to 3,000; the New York Democratic gubernatorial primary, in which current governor Andrew Cuomo faces off against actor Cynthia Nixon; Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's new Instagram account, apparently part of the GOP's "hip new attitude"; ride-share company Uber's halfhearted new logo; the FDA's warnings about the extreme popularity of vaping among teenagers; and a new scatologically themed kids' toy known as "Flushin' Frenzy." Kimmel then sits down with a group of kids who teach him about new apps.
The first guest, Blanchett, then joins Kimmel and chats about seeing fellow Aussie Mendelsohn backstage in casual attire; her former disapproval of the "Live!" bathrooms; the large number of Australian actors gaining popularity in America; her first encounter with "The House With a Clock In Its Walls" (2018) co-star Jack Black; her role as "Madame President" of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival jury and their decision to award the prestigious Palme d'Or to the Japanese family drama "Shoplifters" (2018); and her thoughts on America's bizarre schooling and mathematical systems. After an installment of "This Week in Unnecessary Censorship," Kimmel welcomes Mendelsohn, who discusses the reasons behind his many villainous roles; his role as a Skrull, a green shape-shifting alien, in the upcoming comic-book film "Captain Marvel" (2019); his teenage acting debut in "The Year My Voice Broke" (1987), in which he plays an unexpected "agent of good"; his youthful obsession with "Taxi Driver" (1976) and frustration at not sharing any scenes with legendary actor Robert De Niro in their 2011 film "Killer Elite"; and his upcoming Netflix feature "The Land of Steady Habits" (2018).
