KIDS ARE ALRIGHT, THE: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The premiere of this comedy series about an Irish Catholic couple raising their eight sons in Los Angeles in the "70s.
The entire family is involved in preparations as eldest son Lawrence returns from his studies to enter the seminary. Middle child Tim feels more ignored than ever after Lawrence's return, causing him to act out during church services. Peggy subsequently castigates Timmy for "making a spectacle" of himself. Tensions further flourish at dinner that night, as both Mike and Peggy show favoritism toward Lawrence. When Timmy decides to audition for a children's musical show in Holllywood, his parents are immediately dismissive of his efforts.
Peggy and Mike discover further distress upon finding out that Eddie has a girlfriend, and even worse, that Lawrence is considering dropping out of the seminary. However, upon meeting Eddie's girlfriend Wendy, Peggy begins to change her tune. When Lawrence accompanies Mike to Bingo night at the church, he inadvertently reveals to the crowd that he has decided not to become a priest. Later, Peggy tells an infuriated Mike to make amends with Lawrence. Upon seeking out Lawrence at the apartment of a "friend," Mike finds his son in bed with a woman. Taking Lawrence home, Mike admits that his main goal for his son is to see him get a college degree.
Meanwhile, Frank tattles to Peggy that Timmy has snuck out to go to the children's show audition. Upon entering the auditorium, Peggy and Frank watch as Timmy belts out "Sing," after which Peggy is convinced of her son's talent. Upon finding out that Timmy has been named the lead's understudy, she suggests that an accident could result in Timmy becoming the show's star. Commercials deleted.
