Summary
One in this comedy-drama series, based on the 1990 novel by Elmore Leonard, about a criminal's entanglements with the seedy underbelly of Hollywood film production.
In this episode, Louis informs an outraged Miles that Rick, whom he has shot and tied up, is working with the FBI. Desperate to discover how much he has disclosed, Lou and Miles drag Rick to an abandoned water treatment plant, and under their stern questioning, Rick admits that the Feds are pursuing a case against Amara and have indeed seen their "books," meaning that Lou and Miles can likely be charged with money laundering. Rick also confesses to wearing a wire on several occasions, including that very moment, though Miles deduces that it is recording, not actively transmitting audio. Rick swears he will leave Hollywood for good, and Miles is interrupted by a phone call from Herb Clark, who admits that he cannot identify the partially burnt photograph of the children with the tigers – though Rick notes that it appears to feature actress Debra Schaffer's kids.
Miles and Lou conclude that they cannot simply go on the lam, as they both have families to consider; Miles is surprised to learn that Lou is in fact married to Gladys and expecting a child with her. Elsewhere, Clara tasks her agents to "check on" Rick, and they soon find evidence of his shooting and apparent kidnapping. The plant grows uncomfortably hot when the furnace is turned on; Rick, protesting that he, too, is a father, argues that Miles is at fault for involving him with his criminal scheme in the first place. Lou and Miles conclude that they have no choice but to kill Rick; Rick pleads for a slightly more peaceful death, involving an overdose of pills and a bag over the head, rather than a bullet. Wondering if anyone will care that he is gone, Rick sadly asks Miles and Lou to tell Amara of his genuine feelings for her.
As Rick begins to pass out and slowly suffocate, Miles receives a friendly call from Emma and realizes that he cannot risk going to jail and missing out on her life. He decides to work with the FBI himself, though declares that he will merely "stay out of their way" as they prosecute Amara and obtain immunity for himself and Lou -- meaning that they must allow Rick to live. Lou, however, is indignant at the idea of becoming a "rat" and refuses to accept the plan, threatening to shoot Rick dead if Miles talks to the Feds. Miles merely tells him that Rick's death will be "on him." Miles heads straight to Clara's office and lays out his offer; Agent Buchholz feigns ignorance of any investigation into Amara, Clara confronts Miles directly and explains that they have already amassed a wide array of evidence against Amara and her associates, meaning that Miles' "cooperation" is likely moot. Back at the water treatment plant, Rick is revealed to have survived his pills-and-plastic-bag combo.
