PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST FALL PREVIEWS 2018: TELEMUNDO: EL RECLUSO {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 2018 Fall Preview PALEYFEST events in Los Angeles. This evening celebrates "El Recluso" ("The Inmate"), the dramatic suspense series, based on the Argentinian series "El Marginal," about an American Marine who infiltrates a prison on the Mexican border to investigate a high-profile kidnapping.

Host Rene Reyes (executive in charge of production, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks before introducing the premiere episode, which is then screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 134271.) After the screening, Alfredo Richard (Senior Vice-President of Corporate Communications, Telemundo) moderates the following panelists: executive producer Peter Blacker; production designer Brigitte Broch; and cast members Guy Ecker (John Morris), Ana Claudia Talancón (Frida Villarreal) and Ignacio Serricchio (Lázaro Mendoza / Dante Pardo).

The panelists touch on such topics as: Telemundo's role as a "disrupter," and Telemundo Global Studios President Marcos Santana's interest in catering to new forms of media consumption, including digital platforms; adapting the Argentinian series as Telemundo International Studios' first project; Serricchio's interest in taking the role, his first Spanish-language project, in order to break down stereotypes about Spanish programming; his praise for the multi-talented cast and crew; Talancón's views on her "savior" character; Ecker's desire to avoid "pigeonholing" by pursuing the English-language, not-so-heroic role of powerful judge John Morris; Broch's thorough research into the "different universe" of Mexico and its prison systems; her attention to detail, including elements not shown on camera, and why she dislikes "faking it"; Serricchio's complicated process, both physical and emotional, to find his quiet, reserved character; the extremely convincing and intimidating extras in the prison scenes; Ecker's memories of the disturbing scene in which his character receives a video of his kidnapped daughter Linda (Isabella Castillo); and the crew's positive experience at a real and "benevolent" Mexican prison, at which they took photos for research.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics, among others: subtitle options in the broadcast and digital versions of the series; the show's mixed use of Spanish and English dialogue; and praise for other cast members present in the audience, as well as veteran actor Tony Plana.

Parts of the question-and-answer portion of the panel feature Spanish conversation which is not subtitled.
