QUEEN SUGAR: AFTER THE WINTER {SECOND SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first of two programs found on 136138. The second season premiere in this drama series, based on the novel by Natalie Baszile, which explores the lives of the Bordelon family of Louisiana. In this episode, Nova continues her string of casual one-night stands as Charley makes an impressive presentation to her financial backers – and learns that they will only support her mill if her celebrity husband is an active partner in the deal. Though she assures Remy that she is pursuing divorce proceedings, he decides to "keep it professional" between them for the time being. Ralph Angel wonders how to tell his sister's about his father's secret will, in which he bequeathed all of his land to his son alone, and Micah, celebrating his sixteenth birthday with Charley and Keke, bitterly notes that Davis' extravagant gift of a new car is clearly an attempt to buy his forgiveness. Vi tries in vain to contact Hollywood, and Nova attends a friend's baby shower, declaring that she intends to continue her "adventurous" ways rather than settling down with a traditional family.
Ralph Angel, hard at work on the farm, urges Hollywood to contact Vi directly, and when Vi, Nova and Charley head out for a fun girls' night, they are angered to see Davis at the nightclub with a "lowlife hussy," thus endangering the public image of his happy marriage to Charley. Darla attends an addiction support group meeting and reflects on her complicated childhood, and Charley, unaware that the land is actually entirely Ralph Angel's, is annoyed to hear that he has begun making unilateral decisions, including planting soybeans and repairing Ernest's old tractor. Micah is pulled over by the police for "driving while black" in his flashy new car, while elsewhere the family settles down for a celebratory Juneteeth dinner. Ralph Angel questions the value in Darla "hanging out with other addicts," but she assures him that the 12-step program is helping her to stay clean.
Vi finally makes contact with Hollywood, who agrees that "things didn't end right" between the pair of them, and the family's worry about Micah's unexplained absence escalates when Nova and Charley find his abandoned car on the road. At the police station, a terrified Micah is left in a holding cell, but Davis soon arrives and uses his celebrity status to secure his son's quick release. Charley is disgusted with his deferential "Stepin Fetchit act" with the cops, and Nova attempts to comfort her traumatized nephew as they head for home. Later, Darla tells Ralph Angel that she cannot "play house" with him while she is still in the early stages of recovery, and Micah refuses to discuss the upsetting incident with his mother. Charley, unwilling to partner with her soon-to-be ex, forges Davis' signature on the business agreement.
