OUTLANDER: UNTIMELY RESURRECTION (TV)

Summary

One in this series of fantasy dramas, based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, about a World War II nurse caught up in romance and danger after she is magically transported to the 18th century. In this episode, in the aftermath of Claire and Jamie's disastrous dinner party, Jamie and Murtagh are quickly released from prison, though Alex, falsely accused of assaulting Mary, remains in jail and is quickly dismissed by Sandringham. Claire describes her well-dressed street attackers, who may have been sent by the Comte St. Germain, and Jamie admits he might have accidentally planted the "dame blanche" rumor himself while at Maison Elise. Murtagh, wracked with guilt over not preventing Claire and Mary's attack, learns of an aristocratic gang who must claim a woman's maidenhead as initiation. Claire checks on Mary, who writes a letter absolving Alex of guilt and tells Claire that she can at least now marry her beloved, as she is "unfit" for a formal match. Claire, knowing that Mary must marry Jack Randall instead, considers destroying the letter and leaving Alex in prison.

Prince Edward tells Jamie that he has made a business arrangement with St. Germain to fund the rebellion, dismissing Jamie's warnings about the Comte's grim reputation. Claire helps Alex to leave prison but gently persuades him to give up Mary for her own good, leaving him heartbroken. Jamie and St. Germain have an unfriendly business chat at Maison Elise, with the Comte not quite admitting to being behind the attacks on Claire and on Mary, and Claire wonders if they might fake another smallpox attack in order to have St. Germain's shipments destroyed and therefore prevent the money reaching the king. Jamie then presents Claire with a gift for their child, and Claire admits that, despite her extensive medical knowledge, she feels somewhat emotionally unprepared for motherhood.

Later, Jamie and Claire meet Sandringham at the stables of Versailles, where the Duke informs Jamie that he found the prince to be "an utter ass," as planned. Claire talks with Annalise de Marillac, Jamie's former flame from the University of Paris, and she is horrified when their conversation is interrupted by none other than Black Jack. King Louis strolls up and mocks Randall, wondering how a clansman's wife can be friendly with an English soldier, and Jamie arrives to watch Randall's humiliation as the king suggests that he beg for Alex's freedom "on his knees." Jamie challenges his enemy to a duel, but Claire quickly accuses Randall for Mary's attack and has him temporarily sent to the Bastille. She pleads with Jamie that Randall must live long enough to marry and impregnate Mary in order to ensure Frank's future existence, and Jamie, disgusted at the idea of her bargaining to save the life of his rapist and tormentor, resentfully agrees to a one-year respite.
